IDES OF MARCH - BY TERRI DELCAMPO

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PLPWZR3/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i117

The Ides of March is known world-wide for disasters occurring on it – the murder of Julius Caesar, a raid on South England in 1360, a cyclone in Samoa in 1889, Czar Nicholas abdicating his throne in 1917, German occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939, Great Plains blizzard in 1941, cancellation of the Ed Sullivan Show in 1971, reporting of the disappearing ozone layer in 1988, world health alert about the disease SARS in 2003.

Of course, Owl's Nest being Owl's Nest, it has its own take on Ides of March.

Read Ides Of March, by Terri DelCampo, for a truly different addition to Ides of March happenings. You'll be glad you did.

STOMACH-ROILING ARTICLES & POEMS 2016-2021: BY TERRI DELCAMPO

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0971KWCH5/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=terri+delcampo&qid=1623418926&s=books&sr=1-1

Stomach-Roiling Articles & Poems (2016-2021), by Terri DelCampo, is one of her latest collections.  This is a book that almost did not come to be published until Terri knew in her heart and soul that it had to be written. She realizes that nothing from the past should be hidden. If things are, they could be done over and over again. We learn from the past. We should never gloss things over because that was then and this is now. A lot of evil has been perpetuated in the past. There can be no justification for its dismissal from the history books.

******

Book description:

******

Articles and poetry written in response to the dark years between 2016 and 2021 when the United States democracy was imperiled by an unstable and immoral president. They are not happy poems, but hopefully a reminder that our freedom is fragile, and that Americans must stand united against those who would divide us and undermine our government.

******

This is a great collection of 21st Century History, American Poetry, and History Short Reads. Terri believes every word that she writes in this tome. There is no mirth or merriment in this collection. It is a hard-hitting attack against injustice. Read it if you dare.

LAST CHANCE - BY BLAZE MCROB

https://www.patreon.com/Blaze_McRob

Last Chance, by Blaze McRob, is for those of you looking for an end of days tale with a different twist. It is a mixture of horror, dark fiction, spiritual revenge, and even has some romance sprinkled in. As is my custom, the entire novel will be loaded with action and adventure.

******

Book description:

******

Mother Nature's pissed at humans, for selling her out for cash.

She shows them money cannot save them from lava rivers and volcanic ash.

The only hope for humankind is a hero name of Storm.

Will he and his earth-loving mate see the human species reborn?

******

Here is a short snippet from chapter one to show you I waste no time in getting to some action.

******

Time was running out.

Charlie stared at the clouds building in the west. Once more the forces of nature were about to unleash their fury on the residents of Cheyenne. Since the early days of this infernal devastation of the planet, this city had appeared safe. Six thousand feet high, far removed from the coastal flooding which had obliterated entire cities from the face of the earth, the ravaging tempests of the oceans would not affect life here.

Not so.

Cause and effect. It was happening again.

The skies turned almost black, even though it was early afternoon. Lightning struck the surrounding prairies, leaving beautiful, but garish, displays of the power within the clouds. Thunder boomed, rattling buildings. This was no ordinary thunder: it resonated with a fervor of vengeance, shouting to all who would listen that the skies were king. Humans were frail beings, unable to withstand the onslaught of destruction, and the devastation was seconds away.

Twin tornadoes came in on the city, throwing cars into buildings, any unfortunate souls trapped inside screaming as their vehicles became airborne. Some of the fortunate ones were able to holler out after a violent impact. Others were not so fortunate. Only silence surrounded them.

DESTINY CHANGED - BY BLAZE MCROB

Destiny Changed, by Blaze McRob, is an unusual Ghoul tale, coming from the depths of my twisted  mind. How twisted? Read and find out. The book description says it all:

******

A Novella By Blaze McRob

******

Ghouls are fed up

Can't keep their heads up

In God's eyes they're dreck

A mistake gone unchecked.

Lillith and Algol,

Ghouls that inspire awe

Give Destiny birth

Begin showing Ghoul worth.

The Chosen One surprising

Leads the uprising

By misfits is adored

Babe wields lightning sword.

Twixt Devil and God

Through bloodiest sod

World order arranged

By Destiny changed.

******

(Poem by Terri DelCampo)

******

Here's a short teaser to whet your horror whistle.

******

Springtime. Fresh air carries the aroma of recently shoveled dirt, moistened by the recent rains, throughout the graveyard. Shovels, left behind in a hurry when the downpour started, lie on the ground next to the grave of the newest inhabitant.

Normality? Yes, but a sinister presence surveys the scene, not the least bit happy. Chunks of wet soil cling to his hair-covered, naked body. His nails are long and unkempt, and yet, what difference does it make? They are more effective for him to use when digging than any shovel fashioned by the hands of man. He lives beneath the surface, under the graves, in small cave-like areas formed from his own efforts, surrounded by the clothing removed from the local residents.

They won't say anything. Ha, ha! Dead people can't snitch on him.

The taste of rotting flesh rolls around on his tongue, reminding him of his hunger, his insatiable desire to feed. Heavy rain comes down, slapping a tune on the gravestones better than any drumstick. He delights in the awareness of the cleansing of his hair and skin.

Momentary pleasure; he is still pissed . . . pissed that God remanded him and his kind to suffer the indignities of their existence. Undead, yes. Immortal, yes. However, these things come at the high price of humiliation. Forced to feed on the dead like a common vulture is not to his liking.

Yet, this is the way it's always been. How can it change now? He is not stronger than God; he is merely a creature formed by His hand, to do His bidding.

The new carcass beckons to him, speaking to him, insisting that he feed. His hunger forces him to go and dig up the coffin. He tears the lid open and gazes at the body of a young woman struck down in her prime. She cannot possibly be any more than in her early twenties. Her clothing and hair style tell him this. Maybe he doesn't live amongst the rabble known as humans, but he has devoured enough of them to know the latest fads and fashions, and his highly enhanced sense of smell is able to decipher the age of a person by unfolding different layers of skin and reading them much like a botanist counts the rings of a tree.

This one smells peculiar to him, no odor of decay, of embalming fluids. Recent death. A mortician trying to save a little money. Shit, who knows? As long as she was remanded to the soil in a timely manner, all would be well.

But no; this is more, much more. Fool that he is, his hunger plays games with his mind. His desire to feed overcomes his usual stealth. Vigilance thrown out the window!

She is alive! In some sort of comatose state, but the girl is very much alive.

Now what?! He can't devour her. It is not allowed. Does he close the casket back up and re-bury her?

NINE LIVES - BY BLAZE MCROB

https://www.patreon.com/Blaze_McRob

https://www.patreon.com/posts/nine-lives-42305372

Nine Lives, by Blaze McRob, is one of the newest tales in the Blazing Owl Short Horror series. It's a different take on some of the old legends and stories that I ran across when I was in Vietnam. No matter where you go, or what you're doing, unexplainable things happen. Some are better than others. Could this be one of them? Or is it one of those stories that sometimes place repressed memories in a part of our minds? Read and find out.

*****

Here is a short teaser:

******

The edges of the jungle dance to the tune played by the vibrant colors of the burning village, while twisting, cavorting shadows intersperse with unknown entities hiding beyond where no light will go.

I know what lurks within the boundaries of the dense undergrowth. Most of what resides there is not good. Death lives and thrives at its core and spreads out to capture ever more territory when the veil of darkness works in its favor.

For now, at least, the fire is saving those of us still alive from being entombed within the snare of annihilation. I wonder if that's a good thing, though. Sure, we're saved for now, but at what cost? Capture later on? Torture?

Some fucking life! Yet, some of us can't condone rolling over and accepting a fate of doom. Better to resist and fight 'til the end than to subjugate yourself to the wishes of the tormentors.

Fuck! I don't make the rules. This is war. One side wins. One side loses. It's as simple as that.

Most of the villagers waste no time in leaving their former homes. No sense in staying now. All that remains is burned rubble and ash. We help those who need it to get on their way. Their stares tell me what I already know without a word having been spoken: the burning of their village, the forced evacuation from the little they owned was our fault. Yeah, in their minds, the 'Cong were after us and this was all a retaliatory move.

How the hell are we supposed to fight and win a war where no one respects us or what we are trying to do for them? They would rather roll over and capitulate to the Commie bastards than fight on their own behalves. Not all of them; but a great many feel that way.

It appears that twenty or so of us are left. No sense in leaving now. As long as the fires are raging, we're safer where we're at. We better dig in, though. Once the air around us loses the brilliance of the fires and the all-encompassing darkness takes over, we're sitting ducks.

"C'mon guys!" I holler out. "You know what we have to do. Let's do it."

"But Sarge . . ."

"No buts, soldier! Just do it. That's an order!"

HOLY TERRORS - BY TERRI DELCAMPO

https://books2read.com/u/m2rn9r

Terri DelCampo does not like rapist priests, so when she writes a novel about them you should expect some nastiness. Holy Terrors is her vehicle of retribution for those who have suffered at the hands at the vermin parading as holy men. She holds nothing back. Neither does her little community of Owl's Nest, Delaware. Read. Learn. And fear.

Synopsis:

For he will surely end up like the others

Mutilated, and in owl feathers smothered

If you want a novel to give you chills

That Bobbie Kid, by Blaze McRob, is up on Amazon for your reading pleasure. This is a short story which is actually four short stories wrapped into one. The book cover, skillfully done by Terri DelCampo, explains the premise of the book: an evil kid up to mischief. But be forewarned that Bobbie is no normal kid. Bobbie's mischief involves mayhem, gore, death, and more. There is great power at work, a force that Bobbie can't understand, not at first, anyway.

Are you intrigued yet? I hope you are. This is one of my most evil tales yet.

Revenge comes in many forms.

That Bobbie kid, he's the one, who knows revenge, is oh, so fun!

Blazing Owl Short Horror: Psychopathic Revenge, by Blaze McRob, is a Zombie tale that is not the usual Zombie virus story. Read the teaser below and you'll see what I mean.

******

They pry a couple of loose boards away from the door frame in back and make their way into the building, pushing away the matted cobwebs, and sliding around on some of the fresher rat shit all over the floor.

"Damn it, Herb!" she shouts. "What kind of a place did you bring me into? Is this what you call a romantic hide-a-way? If you think you're going to get any pussy from me in here, you're one delusional son-of-a-bitch!"

"C'mon, Lola, it's not that bad; not in the balcony anyway. Besides, who would have the balls to come in here and nose around in the dark?"

"Yeah, we're the only intelligent ones with guts. There'll be no orgies held in here tonight. Just you and me. I can hardly wait to have my ass slide around on the slime. To anyone else that might be a moment breaker. But not to you."

"That's my girl. I knew you'd come around."

"Come around, my ass! I'm getting the fuck out of here. I'd rather screw a snake in a septic tank."

"Tell you what: let me check out the balcony area as long as we're here. If it's as bad as the rest of the joint, we'll leave. If not, maybe you'll reconsider."

"And I'm supposed to wait right here for you? I don't think so!"

"It's safer here than outside alone."

That's the only thing Herb's said tonight that has made any sense, not that she wants to wait down here. "Okay, I'll wait right here. I have my light. You better have one of your own because I'm not giving mine up."

     "Fair enough."

He works his light slowly across the floor in front of him, wishing now he'd gotten a larger one at the hardware store and climbs the semi-spiral to the balcony. Shining his light on the floor, he finds thick carpeting, and when he gets down on his hands and knees, he discovers the whole area to be immaculate: dry to the touch, with no signs of anything like they walked through downstairs.

"Come here, Lola!" he hollers as he runs down the stairs so fast he misses one and takes a tumble. He reaches for the wall and the railing but is repulsed by a sudden over-powering stench. An enormous shadow looms over him, becoming smaller as it gets closer, ever closer to him.

A face, if one can call it a face, emerges from the shadow, and smiles down at him, not saying a word, just sneering at him, goading him to do anything. Herb reaches up and pulls at the face, shrinking back when his hands jerk back filled with loose flesh.

Before Herb can utter a sound, the creature springs forward and tears out his vocal chords. The young man is silent as his protagonist consumes him alive, enjoying the delights of having him twitch within his grip.

Lola can hear a ruckus in the area of the balcony but is too far away to tell what it is. What's wrong? Herb was excited just moments ago and now . . .

Steps! Steps are coming towards her. They're in no hurry; they're slow and deliberate.

     "Who's there!"

     More steps. Faint breathing.

"Herb! Is that you? Are you okay?"

The breathing becomes heavier, albeit labored, and the steps almost sound like one leg is hesitant, maybe even dragging behind the other one.

Lola backs towards the door. Something is wrong: she needs out of here!

She reaches the door, but as she tries to pull her way out through the opening, long, sinewy hands reach up and grab her, pulling her back in. In too much shock to put up much resistance, she almost willingly accepts the beast's intrusions on her body as he tears her clothing off her body and has his way with her, inserting his rotting but still rock-hard dick deep inside her while eating her breasts as she spasmodically flails about.

Fortunately for Lola, it is over in a hurry as the beast gets too zealous and oversteps the boundaries of what constitute sexual gratification and dietary needs. Her lifeless body is still in the clutches of her captor, but she feels no more pain.

Zane rises up for a bit. There is no need for immediate cleaning up in here. This is his domain. He is its Lord and Master.

Terri DelCampo has compiled quite a collection of horror poetry to sate your poetic horror appetites. Broken Old Broad Busts A Beat: HO - PO ( Horror Poems ), produces in spades. Even the cover art tells a story. I like to think of it as a reflective skeleton. Is that possible? Why not? Terri's poems sure make one think. Rather than go on and on about each and every poem and steal from the ambience that Terri has created, I will merely state that my favorite poem in this collection is Songs From The Hanging Tree. Read it and you'll see why.

LIVING GREEN: WHY SILENT SPRING, BY RACHEL CARSON, IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT BOOK TO READ: BY BLAZE MCROB

Painting by Vi Huntley-Franck

Today, I’m going to suggest a great book to read for those of you concerned with pollution, climate change, and being a responsible human. I’ll be adding in more as my Living Green series continues.

I’ll start with the book that started it all off for environmentalists everywhere. Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson.

https://www.amazon.com/Silent-Spring-Rachel-Carson-ebook/dp/B004H1UELS/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3PR4AL4QSG5CZ&keywords=silent+spring+rachel+carson&qid=1644716283&s=books&sprefix=silent%2Cstripbooks%2C95&sr=1-1

Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was first published in three serialized excerpts in the New Yorker in June of 1962. The book appeared in September of that year and the outcry that followed its publication forced the banning of DDT and spurred revolutionary changes in the laws affecting our air, land, and water. Carson’s passionate concern for the future of our planet reverberated powerfully throughout the world, and her eloquent book was instrumental in launching the environmental movement. It is without question one of the landmark books of the twentieth century.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Silent Spring, released in 1962, offered the first shattering look at widespread ecological degradation and touched off an environmental awareness that still exists. Rachel Carson's book focused on the poisons from insecticides, weed killers, and other common products as well as the use of sprays in agriculture, a practice that led to dangerous chemicals to the food source. Carson argued that those chemicals were more dangerous than radiation and that for the first time in history, humans were exposed to chemicals that stayed in their systems from birth to death. Presented with thorough documentation, the book opened more than a few eyes about the dangers of the modern world and stands today as a landmark work. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

First published by Houghton Mifflin in 1962, Silent Spring alerted a large audience to the environmental and human dangers of indiscriminate use of pesticides, spurring revolutionary changes in the laws affecting our air, land, and water. “Silent Spring became a runaway bestseller, with international reverberations . . . [It is] well crafted, fearless and succinct . . . Even if she had not inspired a generation of activists, Carson would prevail as one of the greatest nature writers in American letters” (Peter Matthiessen, for Time’s 100 Most Influential People of the Century).

******

This is a great book which should be read by every person on the planet. We must not allow giant industries to pollute at will, solely for the purpose of making money. When Rachel Carson wrote this book, she was attacked mercilessly by the killer barons who couldn't care less if untold numbers of people died because of their greed. She fought these people to the grave. Read her book and learn what true dedication to a cause is all about.

FLASH IN THE PAN - BY TERRI DELCAMPO

Flash In The Pan is Terri DelCampo's latest short story. I love how Terri keeps the reader more involved in the story with her styling of warnings throughout the tale, alerting the protagonists about things to do and not to do as the story progresses. She pulls this off well. Naturally, as I read the story, I was on the lookout for more clues to what was inevitable, but which actually wasn't. This brought about a paradox of facts and solutions to every twist and turn. Nothing is cast in stone in this story. This is a most intriguing tale.

MISTS OF PAPOOSE POND - BY BLAZE MCROB

 https://www.patreon.com/posts/mists-of-papoose-43016099

https://www.patreon.com/Blaze_McRob

Mists Of Papoose Pond is one of those weird tales that flits around in my mind, demanding to be told. And so, I allowed my story people to whisper in my ear, telling me which keys to punch, and what words to write. This is how I write. I hope you enjoy my styling method.

******

Where will it begin?

On a mountaintop?

At the bottom of the sea?

In a spaceship?

Or perhaps in a cabin by a pond enveloped by mysterious mists

Mysterious mists that secrete forces of nature…

And good and evil.

******

Ed Hageman wants nothing more than to relax at Papoose Pond, but that's not to be. As the ultimate battle between good and evil shapes up around him, creatures are not what they seem. Many twists of fate, and many shocks await not only Ed and his companions, but those of you who read his story.

Prophets of yore were not all-seeing after all. Gods and devils are not how holy books described them.

Blaze McRob spins the tale.

Blaze McRob untangles the legend.

Blaze McRob finds the meaning in the Mists of Papoose Pond.

******

Here is the first chapter:

******

I can't sleep. My bedroom is stifling, even though it's usually cool in the early morning hours in this part of Maine.

"Shit!" I mutter to myself. "I might as well grab a smoke and go outside where it's cooler."

Slipping into my boxers, I grab my Camels and my lighter and hightail it outdoors where I do enjoy a little more refreshing air. I slide up to the railing of the porch and sit, watching the mists roll across the pond.

Pond: that's a misnomer for you. Nothing in Maine is the same as any place else. Anywhere else, this would be a lake. It's three miles long by a mile or more wide. In New Jersey where I come from, that's a damned lake. What difference does it make?  They call it Papoose Pond, so Papoose Pond it is.

My family has been coming up here for years. At least until my grandfather stopped bringing us. All at once, for no apparent reason, he decided he no longer wanted to spend a week in the rustic cabins in southwestern Maine. Being the tight-lipped German he was, no one was about to get any information out of him. Stubborn was his middle name.

What difference does it matter? My siblings and I have long since split apart, my parents and grandparents are dead, my wife is now my ex, and I just want some me time for a change. Fuck everyone else. This is the perfect place for it: the getaway; my retreat into relaxation before I throw my life back together.

My grandfather told the owners of the pond many years ago that they should fix things up a bit, modernize, get with the times. They did to a point but still manage to keep the rustic look and feel of the place. And the fishing? Still fantastic! Crappie and White Perch still hover around twenty inches long and have deep, thick bodies. As for the Bass fishing, just try plying a surface plug through the waters at night and see how far it goes before some Largemouth or Bronzeback plasters the living hell out of it.

I caught my share of fish hours ago, keeping only enough for some fish stew later in the day, but the sounds floating around, catching my ears, are not the ones associated with fish frolicking and chasing their smaller counterparts before closing in on them for the kill. These sounds are different. I have heard them before, even from my bed. This morning they are closer because I am outside.

The smoke from my Camel curls up into the air, dancing about, trying to mimic the mists rolling in from out on the pond. They're coming in from the north end where the lily pads sit thick at the edge of a deep water drop off. This is the best place on the pond to catch the giant White Perch and Crappies. It is adjacent to the Crooked River access, and springs are in abundance there.

Something else also resides there. I have always felt it, not knowing what it is, but feeling it play along my skin, teasing me, and creating goosebumps before vanishing into nothingness.

From something to nothing in a matter of minutes. Not one time but many. Could this be what caused my grandfather to stop coming here? Did the fear finally get to him? Maybe he found out what it was and wanted no part of it. I'll never know. Dead men don't talk.

Or do they?

What about the day we had a giant stringer of huge fish attached to the oarlocks of the rowboat? Somehow the stringer managed to come free from its attachments and the fish slowly sank towards the deepest part of the lily pad area. My grandfather had plenty of time to snag the stringer with the oar in his hand, but he froze, unable to move, and the stringer and the fish vanished from sight. I started to ask him why he made no effort, but I stopped, knowing the kind of answer I would get: or wouldn't get.

The mists come closer and closer to the cabin, and even though it sits some fifty yards from the pond's edge, the dancing droplets of condensation seemingly pirouette their way across the beach to where I'm sitting, first ankle high, then reaching mid-way up my chest. The cigarette smoke joins with the swirling fog, and they cavort as one, creating a calming feeling massaging my unsettled mind.

Peaceful shapes dance all around me. I smile at ballerinas performing their amazing tiptoe jumps and landings, the mists opening and closing to accentuate their delicate, precise movements. I put my cigarette out, thinking I can go back to sleep, contentment putting me in the mood.

A sudden chill hits me before I can get to my feet. Bone-chilling cold, causing my hands to turn blue instantly. The ballerinas' faces vanish, replaced by monstrous, billowing towers of inhuman shapes.

Substance comes from the distortion of the mists! Flesh and bone hovering over me, smiling at me. No, not smiling - leering at me!

Brownish-yellow teeth, sharp and pointed, force their way into prominence when the creatures open their mouths, tongues lapping at miniscule lips, telling me where their next meal is coming from. Me! They want me!

I run to the door of the cabin, hoping to get inside and lock it behind me so they can't get inside. Sure, as if the door will pose a problem for these monsters!

A huge, scaly leg reaches out and trips me, sending me to the floor of the porch. Gigantic, webbed hands reach out to me, the sharpened, elongated nails threatening to tear me apart. Water drips off these creatures combining with a slime from their powerful chests and finds its way into my eyes. I scream in pain as blindness overcomes me!

It's just as well. I don't want to see what's going to happen next. Let it be over! Let it be over!

The pressure of the air coming down on me, forced by the behemoths' closeness, intensifies. They are almost on me!

This novel is loaded with horror, non-stop action, and monsters. Lots of monsters.

Terri DelCampo is a fabulous writer with a diabolical mind. In James Reborn each new revelation, each unveiling of another, darker level to which the human species is capable of sinking, brought a fresh shock of wonder at the genius behind the relentless evil unfolding on the page. So painful, so physically emotive; I had to set the book aside to breathe. Visceral and truly frightening, though I had to pause for sanity’s sake, I could not stop until the end. If you want a well-written book that will shake you to your core, this is it.

JANGLES THE CLOWN - BY BLAZE MCROB

https://www.patreon.com/posts/tales-of-jangles-43117623

https://www.patreon.com/Blaze_McRob

Jangles The Clown is more than just a clown horror tale. It is actually three short stories rolled into one.  Jangles is also a Vampire story. So, if you love clowns and vampires, you'll love this short story collection.

******

Book description:

******

If you love clowns,

Beware; be cautious

When the circus comes to town.

If you fear clowns,

Beware their chocolates

With candy shell all around.

If you've never met a clown

Come to Mardi Gras

And know the bloody side of town.

******

Here's a short sample to whet your horror thirst:

******

The small circus has traveled pretty much the same route for years. Sure, there have been a few occasions where extreme weather or wars have caused some fluctuations, but the little farming communities in the far-flung sections of this part of western New Jersey look forward to the big top with all the excitement of the high-wire acts, the animal taming with lions and tigers looking as if they might maul their handlers at any time, and the balancing acts done by agile men and women on barrels and other assorted objects seemingly much more suited to other uses.

Yet, the mainstay of the circus, the clowns, are often overlooked. Sure, there are those who laugh at their antics, appreciating the dexterity they possess to perform the nimble moves needed to make it appear their falls, slaps, and other hilarious hijinks are real and not contrived, but, for the most part, there is a ho-hum attitude about them, and the children often times are afraid of the brightly made-up faces of these entertainers and scream whenever one comes close.

Jangles is the clown who has been with the Davis Bros. Circus the longest; exactly how long no one can really remember. It seems as if he has always been a part of the show. He is not happy with the lack of respect given to him and his peers, but he chooses not to engage in the dressing room conversations when his friends discuss the possibility that maybe, just maybe, the clown as an entertainer is going the way of the dodo bird.

Nonsense, he figures. Without clowns, there would be no circuses. If circuses themselves vanish from the scene, then maybe what they say is true, yet that won't happen.

Never will that happen, he thinks. Never.

The evening air is hot and humid tonight, typical for late June, and there is no movement in it at all. The other clowns are uncomfortable in their costumes and heavy make-up, just waiting for the show to be over so they can strip down and cool themselves off, but the heat doesn't bother Jangles. Bring it on, he thinks. I can handle it.

When the show is over, everyone in the circus rushes to cool off as the crowds return home, back to their mediocre existences. Jangles leaves his makeup and costume on and watches the guests leave, taking note of which direction they are going and keeping a close eye on those who leave alone.

Yes, the people who came here on their own are the ones who interest Jangles the most. A private show for them would be most fitting. He will not let them down.

A young lady, not in any hurry to leave, takes in all the majesty the Big Top has to offer. Now that it is empty, there is a special added charm: the flickering lights catch all the corners, creating shadows of mystery and allure. From out of one of the corners, Jangles steps forth, his bright red mouth and white face talking to her without the benefit of words.

They move towards each other, deliberately, but not pushing the timing any. The moment is special. It cannot be rushed.

The clown stares into her eyes before moving to her throat, where he gently places his lips, first planting a sweet kiss upon her, and then releasing the fangs within his mouth to dig into her carotid. He draws long and hard on the bright red sustenance flowing from her neck, which to him is as mead presented from the Gods.

GREEN GEEZERS' BOOKSHELF: "THICKER THAN WATER" BY ERICA CIRINO - REVIEW BY TERRI DELCAMPO

https://greengeezers.blogspot.com/2022/01/green-geezers-bookshelf-thicker-than.html

https://greengeezers.blogspot.com/

Terri DelCampo says:

******

"I highly recommend Thicker Than Water by Erica Cirino, who has combined science and writing to invite us on her journey all over the world to learn about the ocean plastic crisis."

"This book is chock full of information, presented in an exceptionally readable way, as Cirino moves from the decks of a 54 foot sloop on an expedition to the North Pacific Gyre – coined "The Great Pacific Garbage Patch," to collect samples from a plastic-infused ocean, (and in turn, plastic-infused fish bellies), to Kristian Syberg's lab in Denmark where all those samples were brought to be studied, to New Orleans with its toxic refineries and chemical complexes, to plastic-laden villages and beaches in Thailand, to plastic saturated Kamilo beach in Hawaii, and even back in time to 1972 when microplastics were first mentioned in scientific papers by scientists like Gerald Scott and Edward J. Carpenter."

"This book is not only a chronicle of Ms. Cirino's work, but also a call to action for communities and legislators around the world to join the fight to eliminate plastic pollution. Most importantly, Thicker Than Water is an interesting, informative, and vividly detailed story that needs to be read and shared by everyone."

The Long Run To Freedom is a story of horror, war, and survival. True friendship goes beyond shared joys. Sometimes one must dig down deep: deeper than ever before.

******

Here's the opening paragraph to my short story:

******

I knew I would get out of this Hell trap. It was when, not if. One night, my chance came. Some kind of a commotion occurred not too far from the camp. I could hear people scurrying around everywhere. As soon as all the hubbub in the camp subsided, I went to the far end of the hut, opposite the door, and ran just as fast as I could, hitting the door so hard that it fell down onto the ground with me on top of it. That was my lucky day because the only guard left in the camp just happened to be on the other side of that door. With me and the door on top of him, it wasn't that difficult to neutralize him.

WISDOM OF A CHILD - BY BLAZE MCROB

https://www.patreon.com/Blaze_McRob

Wisdom Of A Child is one of my more reflective stories. Some of the best discussions we have are with those we least expect to be talking with. Read my teaser below and you'll see what I'm talking about.

******

Three A.M. I sit outside on my lawn, cup of coffee in hand, looking across the road, watching the deer feeding on the expansive grassy area in front of the Township school. The bright moon allows me to see their every move. They are such docile creatures, seemingly content, but still ever vigilant. After all, this is the world of mankind, a world not always compatible with the other inhabitants residing on the planet.

It’s calm outside: no traffic to speak of and seemingly everyone else around is asleep. This is my time to be alone with my thoughts, no one near to intrude into my private early morning domain, a place where everything is calm, relaxed, and stress is merely a word of what was and will be, having nothing to do with the present.

Mists rise up from the lush greenery, a hint of the humidity to come. It is pleasant out here for the moment, but the oppressive heat will be here soon enough. Time to enjoy what I have now.

“I love watching the fog roll in like that, don’t you?”

I glance in the direction of the voice and see a young child, probably around five or six years old, looking at me. He’s sitting in a miniature lawn chair, no more than two feet from me. I should be frightened, or at least startled by his sudden appearance, but there’s a kind of calmness around him that puts me at ease. My only wonderment resides in the fact I never heard him come over to me.

There is just a sliver of a moon tonight, barely enough to show the surf for what it is. Others like me stare out into the gently rippling waters, the hunger in our bellies driving us mad from the ravenous urge to seek out more prey. But one cannot eat what is not there.

Maybe . . .  just maybe if I wade out into the red surf one more time there will be a morsel overlooked from before.

Others beat me to it, but it is all for naught. The blood-stained waters are barren. We saw to that earlier. Santa Catalina. The old song beats a wild staccato in my head. No, this is no longer an island of romance. Leave me alone, damn it!

But it doesn't leave me alone. Over and over again the words assault me. How can there be romance without people? There can't. This is insanity. Everything is insanity now. 4,000 residents of this island are either now dead or like me. Maybe I'd be better off dead.

The old clay and metal pipes which wore away long ago allowed human sewage to flow into the city's ground water and eventually into Avalon Bay. Over the years the bacteria deposits grew and gained entry into the bodies of those tending the beaches. Day after day we were assaulted without even knowing it.

The fecal bacteria inside my body tear at me, changing me more and more from what once was a human to whatever it is I am now. Chunks of flesh have fallen away from me, leaving boils and pockets of pus. My hair is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, joining with my departed flesh as it becomes litter on the beach, further desecrating it.

DID YOU KNOW ABOUT TAR SANDS? - BY TERRI DELCAMPO

From Terri DelCampo:

Tar sands are the most land wasteful, all around filthy, horrible for the environment, life-threatening form of energy in existence right now. Here's why I say that:

What are tar sands?

Tar sands, or oil sands, are a mixture of mostly sand, clay, water, and bitumen, which is what all the fuss – and filthy, water polluting, soil polluting, toxic process – is about. Bitumen is made of the same molecules as liquid oil and the same fossil fuel products are made from it.

What is so bad about tar sands?

The process of getting the bitumen out of the tar sand is complicated, filthy, dangerous, and expensive. Far more so than drilling for liquid oil, which is bad enough.

The two ways of mining bitumen:

1)     Surface mining: The tar sands are collected, transported to a refinery, and the bitumen is separated from it.

2)     "In-situ" mining: Bitumen is changed into liquid state by heating it with steam, underground, where it occurs naturally.

Obviously, because so much processing has to happen to refine it to the liquid oil state, there are more carbon dioxide emissions (15% more) than conventional oil. Because more and more "in-situ" mining is necessary, to get at bitumen deeper in the earth, those dangerous emissions are likely to increase.  Both of these methods create more pollution than liquid oil.
