ROMANTIC SHADOWS - BY TERRI DELCAMPO & BLAZE MCROB

https://books2read.com/u/31rapl

Romantic Shadows, by Terri DelCampo and Blaze McRob, is a collection published by Blazing Owl Press on our wedding anniversary back in 2016. We eased up a bit on our usual horror fare and wrote some romance-themed short stories and poems. Yes, there are certainly elements of horror contained within, but that is not all we present in this tome. Lovers are reunited in magical ways, the Dance Of Love soothes yearning hearts, and much more.

We hope you enjoy the softer side of horror we share with you here.

LIVING GREEN: CLIMATE CHANGE AND PANDEMICS - BY BLAZE MCROB

Painting by Vi Huntley-Franck

Climate change contributes to disease outbreaks around the world. More deadly pandemics will come if something is not done soon to slow climate change down.

Most of these diseases originated in animals, specifically wildlife, that transmitted the diseases to humans. Habitat destruction and agricultural development on wildland force wild animals closer to humans. This, in turn, allows new strains of infectious diseases to thrive.

Removing forests eliminates the natural environment of some species. This doesn’t mean they have no place to live. Human houses, sheds, and the like can attract insects, bats, and more.

Covid-19 originated in a horseshoe bat, transmitted through another animal, and then to humans. Bats have more than 3,000 strains of coronavirus that can be transmitted to humans. In the wild, they don’t have close proximity to humans. Jam houses up the forest edges, and you’re talking a whole new game. Where are they to go, but the happy homeowner’s domicile?

With a loss of habitat comes possible extinction of animal and plant species. Logging, fires, and agricultural expansion are all at fault. The Amazon rainforest is seeing this now with the rape of the land by logging and mining. This area is ripe for Covid-19 spread.

The risk of mosquito-borne viruses will increase in the tropics, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. Unfortunately, poorer countries will be hardest hit. Dengue fever, for example, will hit hard in areas where people can’t afford air conditioning and protections against disease exposure. West Nile Virus, enhanced by warmer temperatures, will spread easier in birds and then to people.

MEATLESS MONDAY IS COMING UP! - OAT MILK FOR GREEN GEEZERS - BY TERRI DELCAMPO

https://greengeezers.blogspot.com/2022/01/meatless-monday-is-coming-up-oat-milk.html

https://greengeezers.blogspot.com/

From Terri DelCampo

******

"Okay, there are times when a girl just needs a Kahlua and Cream. Even on Meatless Mondays. My first oat milk test was a vegan alternative to my fav "I-need-a-drink" go-to for Meatless Mondays – because Mondays can be tough, right?

"Oat milk has become my go-to dairy milk alternative, which has the same amount of calcium, I was surprised to find, and, heh, heh, heh, a little experiment struck me. I loaded a glass with ice, filled it two-thirds full with oat milk and topped it off with Kahlua. Score! Sweet and yummy! Done. (I may give vanilla-flavored oat milk a whirl for this particular thing… I'll let you know.)

"With that important stride into veganism made, I decided to keep moving forward."

SIXTH FLOOR RETRIBUTION - BY BLAZE MCROB

https://www.amazon.com/Blazing-Owl-Short-Horror-Retribution-ebook/dp/B0999M84PL/ref=sr_1_11?crid=O9DSN9UEI0EY&dchild=1&keywords=blaze+mcrob&qid=1626398680&s=books&sprefix=blaze%2Caps%2C164&sr=1-11

Blazing Owl Short Horror: Sixth Floor Retribution is one of my latest short horror tales. Sometimes justice has to be meted out with a harsh hand. This is one of those stories. Take a ride where the law of the land comes from a source not known by many. I hope you enjoy this escape through the realm of the occult.

Blaze McRob

******

Read a short introduction to this tale of retribution.

******

Low fog drapes the cemetery landscape, cavorting about in myriad shapes when gentle breezes tease the evening air. But there is no frolicking in the southeast corner. That is where the newborns lie, some in shallow graves with no headstones to mark their presence. A simple one foot by six-inch slab on the ground: that is all the space afforded them. Sadly enough, many of the plaques merely say, “Baby Smith,” “Baby Jones,” and the like. As if these children don’t even deserve a first name? That is wrong.

The Angels Section this is called. A bench is placed here for parents to come, sit, and reflect on the children born to them who never survived beyond a day or two.

I sit here tonight and look at one of the few headstones in this area. There is no “Baby Olsen” mentioned on the stone. Robert Olsen is the name etched into the marble. It was the least I could do for my son. After only one day of life, he mysteriously became ill from some so-called staph infection and died. My wife couldn’t handle it and left for parts unknown. No loss for me. It’s her life. She can live it as she sees fit.

It took a while for me to scrape enough money together for the headstone, but I did it. The doctors . . . the idiot doctors responsible for my son’s death took me to court to get their money and won the case. Yeah, the medical community always finds a way to get their money. Never mind the fact they botched everything up from the very beginning. I’m no doctor, but when a baby is born in a room that has not been sterilized correctly, and the doctor arrives, the stench of whiskey on his breath, stumbling around the room in a stupor, and almost rips the baby out of the womb, there is definite neglect present.

Sure, but everything was hushed up, and I was thrown out of the birthing room when I demanded another doctor.

That was three years ago. And the time has come for retribution.

Shonk, by Terri DelCampo, is one of those stories that has you guessing right up until the end. Just when I thought I knew where the tale was taking me, I discovered I was wrong. But that's the way I like a good horror story. If everything is easily determined ahead of time, the excitement is lacking. Being pulled into a story is the way to go. Read this story, and you'll see what I mean.

LIVING GREEN: BY BLAZE MCROB - THE ROBERT W. SCHERER POWER PLANT

Painting by Vi Huntley-Franck

There exists in Juliette, Georgia a monster of a coal plant. The Robert W. Scherer Power plant. It is the most powerful coal-fired plant in North America. It has four units, each producing 930 megawatts. It is also the fourth-largest electric generating plant in the United States. The worst thing about this plant? Twenty million tons per year of Greenhouse Gas emissions. That makes it the #1 emitter in the United States.

The coal used by the plant comes from Wyoming’s Powder River Basin and is delivered by trains, some with up to 135 cars. Between two and five trains a day are unloaded, using an air-dump system where they ride over a trestle and are unloaded from the bottom without stopping. This usually takes around ninety minutes. I’ve watched this unloading procedure. It’s efficient but very dirty. There is soot everywhere.

This plant is under Georgia EPD investigation for coal ash pond leeching, drinking water contamination, and air pollution. The two 1001 feet high smokestacks and the two 847 feet high ones send a massive display of pollution high into the sky.

However, the residents of Juliette are getting sick from the coal ash which was never cleaned up properly. It’s polluted their water. Their wells are contaminated. Many of the residents left town, worried about their health and the health of their families.

Georgia Power, owner of the plant, stores their coal wastes freely in the ground, claiming this plan is well within federal and state regulations and poses no risks to public health or drinking water. The company does not use protective liners to prevent toxins from seeping into groundwater.

Coal-fired plants are not only the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, but the ash also contains arsenic, lead, mercury, and uranium. Yet the EPA treats it like nonhazardous waste. Hexavalent chromium is also present. Residents in the area are complaining about cancers, nosebleeds, and neurological disorders.

Meanwhile, the Georgia Department Of Health claims that there is nothing to worry about, that the wells are safe. I call horseshit on this.

It’s another cover-up. Coal-fired plants need to go away. They’re not only a huge reason for global warming, but they’re also poisoning people. Killing them outright. They need to be shut down now.

******

Supposedly, this plant is scheduled for the shutdown of one of its four units in 2022. However, there is still the problem of what to do with the coal ash. My opinion? Nothing will be done. And what about the other three units? Read more about this at  https://www.sierraclub.org/press-releases/2020/06/largest-coal-plant-us-retire-unit-2022

We need to wake up to what is going on around the world. This power plant is not the only one that needs removal. There are many more. More work needs to be done now to completely change over to renewable energy.

Thank you for reading this.

This Green Geezer highly recommends Youth Unstoppable, a 2021 documentary about the rise of the Global Youth Movement – which, incidentally, did not start with the adolescents in this film, but with adolescents already concerned decades earlier.

Filmed, narrated, and produced by Slater Jewell-Kemker

Slater Jewell-Kemker had, by the age of 14, seen so much more of the world than most adults at retirement age. And I'm not talking class trips to Paris to visit the Eiffel Tower.

LIVING GREEN: THE RINGWOOD MINES LANDFILL SITE - BY BLAZE MCROB

Painting by Vi Huntley-Franck

As I promised, I have done some digging and have come up with some facts about some of the Superfund sites that I will begin sharing. The first of these is the Ringwood Mines landfill site in the borough of Ringwood, New Jersey. This sits close to Mahwah in Passaic County. This is a 500-acre former iron mining site going back to the old colonial times. Ford Motor Company bought it in the 1960s and used it for waste disposal. Paint sludge was dumped down the old mine shafts, spreading into the water table and soil.

The EPA added it to its superfund priority list in 1984 demanding that a cleanup be conducted of the hazardous wastes. In 1994, it was deleted from the list, only to have it relisted later due to failed environmental remediation. Portions of the landfill site there had even been used for affordable housing for the Ramapough people in the 1970s. They dared to build there even though they knew the land was contaminated. All for the sake of the almighty dollar.

It was placed back on the Superfund priority list in 2006. By 2011, over 50,000 tons of industrial and hazardous waste was removed from the site. Millions of gallons of paint sludge had been dumped in the area. Even the Mafia got in on the act, fighting for the rights to conduct illegal dumping there.

Environmentalists worry that contaminants could get into groundwater supplies and pollute the waters feeding into Wanaque Reservoir, which supplies water to a fourth of the state.

On top of that, the rates of cancer are high in the area, and levels of lead and antimony are also well above the safe range.

For a detailed look at the past injustices done by Ford Motor Company and others at this Superfund site, go to https://actionnetwork.org/letters/ramapough-ringwood-environmental-justice-comment-campaign

You will be shocked by the atrocities that occurred there. Other links pertaining to this site are:

For a truly heart-breaking article, read https://www.enn.com/articles/2760-new-jersey-community-endures-decades-of-fords-toxic-legacy

This Superfund site is one of the worst ever. It's all about greed. The people who allowed this to happen are pure scum, through and through. Don't let this happen in your corner of the world, folks. The lives of you, your family, and your friends are all at stake. Keep alert and don't sell out to the evil-mongers.

WICHITA MASSACRE - BY BLAZE MCROB

Blazing Owl Short Horror: Wichita Massacre is another one of my short horror stories. Be warned that you don't want to piss off a Gnome. They might be short in stature, but they can get rather nasty when provoked. Olaf is one such Gnome. He has a rather intense hatred of Charles and his ilk. I offer a short teaser below. You'll have to read the entire short tale to see what kind of evil shenanigans Olaf gets into.

Happy reading!

Blaze McRob

******

A typical night for this part of Kansas. It's hot and muggy without a breath of air. Olaf stands in front of his little house in the trunk of a tree, grinning like a cat with a mouse under its paw. The heat doesn't bother him. Truth be told, he finds it much to his liking. Little people like him can tolerate what the human miscreants can't.

"Ah," he says to himself, "what a fine evening to stroll about, smoke my pipe, and perhaps wander over to the big pond these people have built and do some fishing. Yes, some Largemouth Bass would be mighty tasty."

He goes back inside his dwelling and grabs his fishing rod and tackle box. Laughing to himself, thinking about the poor confused child he stole these items from a few years back, he heads towards the pond.

"A bigger pole would not fit my hands," he says. "This is just right."

Visions of a tummy filled with pan fried Bass put a decided bounce in his step, and he arrives at the pond in no time at all. On dark nights such as this, a surface plug teased across the surface always resulted in a few careless fish winding up in his possession. Tonight is no exception. He only keeps what he himself can eat, knowing he has no way to keep any more from spoiling in the Kansas heat.

Once, there were others like him here, but they left, preferring the weather farther to the north. Aye, and a lot less of these humans. It seemed as if they destroyed things no matter where they went. The air, land, and the very water they drank, was tainted because of them. And the worst of the lot? He lives in the huge mansion set way back in from the road.

Charles is rich, but his money comes at the expense of others. More, more, more. It is always more. Why? He has enough of everything for many lifetimes.

Olaf never understood it. Deep down inside, the festering had been growing for many years, but what could he, one single Gnome, do against him, and the rest of the evil ones waiting to take his place? He dreamed often of charging into the big house and sending Charles off to the Promised Land, or wherever folks of his ilk went to, but dreams were all they were. No more would they come true than would the actuality of Charles deciding the pipeline he wanted to build was an evil thing.

The one thing he has on his side is that people do not believe that Gnomes exist, other than the plaster ones they keep on their lawns. If they knew, they would surely shit a brick. Olaf laughs at that, thinking of all the language changes he has been subjected to hearing over the years. What stupid people!

And, if they knew that Olaf and his kind were indeed among the living, they would have less concern for them than the wolves they try to annihilate.

PARANORMAL POSSE - BY BLAZE MCROB

Paranormal Posse is the newest serialized novel that I'm putting up on my Patreon page. This is going to be a long one. I have no idea yet how many chapters it will encompass, or how many books will become a part of this whacky world. It is a combination of horror, dark fiction, paranormal, snark, and much more. You can get an idea of the shenanigans included in this tome by viewing the delightful cover art that Terri DelCampo did for it. I hold nothing back in this novel, so get in on the fun and read along. You'll be glad you did.

This novel is exclusive to my Patreon page.

Here is a short snippet from the first chapter:

Damn the dark! The power’s out again. I can’t see a thing. Wait. I have a pair of night goggles I’ve been playing around with sitting on the table next to the bed.

I put them on and am amazed at how well they work. Too bad I didn’t have these when I was in ‘Nam. Night blindness might be a much lesser curse than a lot of other things, but when you’re in the midst of battle it sure is nice to be able to see your enemy.

The night goggles are one of many new toys my wife and I have been experimenting with. Even though the middle of the road candidate won the election this year, I know hot beds of fascism will rear their ugly heads. Shit, we’re already living in a police state. Why people deny it makes no sense to me. Liberty after liberty is vanishing in the country. Terri - my wife - and I are ready for it. We have weapons, shooting range expertise, and more to combat it if it comes. Yes, we’re only two people, but, if the shit hits the fan, we will be prepared. At the worst, we won’t go out without a battle.

Happy reading, my friends.

Terri DelCampo has brought many tales written by her to Blazing Owl Press. I'm sure readers have noticed we have many books here. Most of these are Terri's. I might catch up in time, but, for now, she is the champ. Parliament is one of those books, a frightening novel blending non-fiction with fiction. Sometimes that happens. This story is one of those. There is legend; there is lore; there is horror.

This is one of Terri's best works.

Enjoy.

Book description:

The battle for good and evil begins,

With Hildeberta and Peter, God knows who wins.

In the Abbey House the legacy starts.

Hexenprozesse broke millions of hearts.

Owl's Nest was waiting the witches knew,

Deep in their souls so away they flew.

Terri has a generous free sample on Amazon you can read that will, most certainly, entice you to read the entire novel.

LIVING GREEN: SUPERFUND SITES - BY BLAZE MCROB

 Painting by Vi Huntley-Franck

I was digging up material for another article I was going to post today, but I stumbled across some troubling facts about another issue. A very serious one that needs to be addressed. That happens to be Superfund sites. These are, quite simply, any lands within the USA that are contaminated by various hazardous wastes. In 1980, the 96th Congress established the Superfund program to clean them up.

Many of you are aware that these sites exist. Probably, some of you thought the necessary cleaning of these sites was either already completed or was being worked on. New Jersey, a state I called home for many years has more of these sites than any other state in the nation. It has 114 sites.

The owners of the worst of the worse sources of pollution, commonly had practices of dumping toxic chemicals on the ground, in rivers, in the ocean, out in the open. And more. Much more. Abandoned warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and processing plants utilized landfills and barrels left in the woods. I've run across many of them. Too many of them. They polluted the air, ground, and water.

I lived, for a while in Sussex County, New Jersey, which was one of the more pristine counties in the state. Or so I thought. The water supply of my hometown was half a mile away from one of these sites and was four miles away from another one. There were others within a short radius of my house. I believe you can see a pattern now. Add in other places, the smaller ones where barrels were hidden, and there is a very disturbing picture. Pristine, it was not.

The cleanup program for these sites appears to be running out of money to do the necessary work.  Trump wanted to cut even more funding for the program. Hopefully, that won't happen now that he's out of office, but I wouldn't bet my money on it. We need to be vigilant. Always. Especially in matters of life and death.

So, what happens if these sites are not cleaned up? Chemicals of every kind will attack, and, in many cases, kill humans and other animals.

1. PCBs can cause cancer and impaired fetal brain development.

2. Pesticides are carcinogenic. They are also associated with Parkinson's disease, miscarriage, nerve damage, and birth defects.

3. Dioxins can cause cancer, reproductive and developmental disorders, chloracne, skin rashes, and liver damage.

4. Chloroform is carcinogenic, has potential reproductive damage, can cause birth defects, dizziness, fatigue, and kidney damage.

5. Heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury, lead, aluminum, and cadmium can cause cancer, neurological disorders, Alzheimer's disease, foggy head, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, abnormal heart rhythm, and damage to blood vessels.

This is scary enough, but I have found many documents related to many of these sites around the state. For the most part, much has been hidden about past work and treatment of a lot of the chemical toxins. They are a matter of public record. Some of the records try to show that much has been accomplished. Reading the reports with a scientific and objective mind tells me otherwise. For example, one of the sites which could never get some 26,000 gallons of toxic waste completely removed is now a children's park. Agent Orange in the Passaic River endangers the lives of many thousands of people. Paint sludge and other toxic chemicals were dumped into abandoned mines. These files are just sitting around, waiting to be read. They're in official PDF form. All one has to do is read them with a discerning eye and know the bullshit they're trying to shoo away.

In many cases, the studies were conducted using skewed statistics that did not use objective logic. Ask the wrong questions, and the statistics will be skewed. It will take time for me to do this, but I aim to dig deep and get the right answers. This needs an investigative approach.

Some things are important and need to be brought to light. This is one of them.
