Terri DelCampo has compiled quite a collection of horror poetry to sate your poetic horror appetites. Broken Old Broad Busts A Beat: HO - PO (Horror Poems), produces in spades. Even the cover art tells a story. I like to think of it as a reflective skeleton. Is that possible? Why not? Terri's poems sure make one think. Rather than go on and on about each and every poem and steal from the ambiance that Terri has created, I will merely state that my favorite poem in this collection is Songs From The Hanging Tree. Read it and you'll see why.

Damn the dark! The power’s out again. I can’t see a thing. Wait. I have a pair of night goggles I’ve been playing around with sitting on the table next to the bed.

I put them on and am amazed at how well they work. Too bad I didn’t have these when I was in ‘Nam. Night blindness might be a much lesser curse than a lot of other things, but when you’re in the midst of battle it sure is nice to be able to see your enemy.

The night goggles are one of many new toys my wife and I have been experimenting with. Even though the middle of the road candidate won the election this year, I know hot beds of fascism will rear their ugly heads. Shit, we’re already living in a police state. Why people deny it makes no sense to me. Liberty after liberty is vanishing in the country. Terri - my wife - and I are ready for it. We have weapons, shooting range expertise, and more to combat it if it comes. Yes, we’re only two people, but, if the shit hits the fan, we will be prepared. At the worst, we won’t go out without a battle.

Shonk, by Terri DelCampo, is one of those stories that has you guessing right up until the end. Just when I thought I knew where the tale was taking me, I discovered I was wrong. But that's the way I like a good horror story. If everything is easily determined ahead of time, the excitement is lacking. Being pulled into a story is the way to go. Read this story, and you'll see what I mean.
