STRUGGLE TO WRITE - FLASHBACK TO 1995: BY TERRI DELCAMPO

Struggle to Write - Flashback to 1995: by Terri DelCampo is a post on Terri's BROKEN OLD BROAD BLOGS! website.

[Originally published as a Write Now blog, this was written on 5/21/95, just before massive changes in my life.]

From Terri:

******

Thirty-seven years on shaky ground.

Writing always sidetracked.  Marriage, kids, jobs, housework, procrastination.

Family transitional stages, depressions.

******

I’m responsible for my own dreams coming true, even if others stand back waiting for me to fall on my face.

******

It’s easy to me to see why I’ve yet to achieve my dreams, and even easier to blame it on everything and everyone else in my life.  What it all boils down to is responsibility.

My responsibility to myself.

******

I think I’ve earned my turn to work on my own dreams and make them come true.

And sooner or later I’ll convince an editor of that.

I've only included a few lines of Terri's post. Get inside her head back in 1995 and learn more about Terri DelCampo: the person, and the author.

BLAZE MCROB IS A CAMP NANOWRIMO WINNER

https://nanowrimo.org/

July is one of the Camp NaNoWriMo months for the year. This year, I worked on a sequel novel to one I completed earlier this year. It's a difficult book to attach a single genre to. There are elements of real-life horror, dark fiction, self-discovery, perseverance, religion ( both pro and con ), right and wrong, and a whole lot more. I set a modest goal of 50,000 words for the month and wrote 120,121. I'm pretty happy with that.

Now it's on to a lot of editing so I can publish it, probably early next year. The first in this series will come out this fall. The fun begins.

WICHITA MASSACRE - BY BLAZE MCROB

Blazing Owl Short Horror: Wichita Massacre is another one of my short horror stories. Be warned that you don't want to piss off a Gnome. They might be short in stature, but they can get rather nasty when provoked. Olaf is one such Gnome. He has a rather intense hatred of Charles and his ilk. I offer a short teaser below. You'll have to read the entire short tale to see what kind of evil shenanigans Olaf gets into.

Happy reading!

Blaze McRob

******

A typical night for this part of Kansas. It's hot and muggy without a breath of air. Olaf stands in front of his little house in the trunk of a tree, grinning like a cat with a mouse under its paw. The heat doesn't bother him. Truth be told, he finds it much to his liking. Little people like him can tolerate what the human miscreants can't.

"Ah," he says to himself, "what a fine evening to stroll about, smoke my pipe, and perhaps wander over to the big pond these people have built and do some fishing. Yes, some Largemouth Bass would be mighty tasty."

He goes back inside his dwelling and grabs his fishing rod and tackle box. Laughing to himself, thinking about the poor confused child he stole these items from a few years back, he heads towards the pond.

"A bigger pole would not fit my hands," he says. "This is just right."

Visions of a tummy filled with pan fried Bass put a decided bounce in his step, and he arrives at the pond in no time at all. On dark nights such as this, a surface plug teased across the surface always resulted in a few careless fish winding up in his possession. Tonight is no exception. He only keeps what he himself can eat, knowing he has no way to keep any more from spoiling in the Kansas heat.

Once, there were others like him here, but they left, preferring the weather farther to the north. Aye, and a lot less of these humans. It seemed as if they destroyed things no matter where they went. The air, land, and the very water they drank, was tainted because of them. And the worst of the lot? He lives in the huge mansion set way back in from the road.

Charles is rich, but his money comes at the expense of others. More, more, more. It is always more. Why? He has enough of everything for many lifetimes.

Olaf never understood it. Deep down inside, the festering had been growing for many years, but what could he, one single Gnome, do against him, and the rest of the evil ones waiting to take his place? He dreamed often of charging into the big house and sending Charles off to the Promised Land, or wherever folks of his ilk went to, but dreams were all they were. No more would they come true than would the actuality of Charles deciding the pipeline he wanted to build was an evil thing.

The one thing he has on his side is that people do not believe that Gnomes exist, other than the plaster ones they keep on their lawns. If they knew, they would surely shit a brick. Olaf laughs at that, thinking of all the language changes he has been subjected to hearing over the years. What stupid people!

And, if they knew that Olaf and his kind were indeed among the living, they would have less concern for them than the wolves they try to annihilate.

BOOK REVIEW FOR: MEET ME IN MAINE - BY SUSANNE LEIST

 https://www.amazon.com/Meet-Me-Maine-Book-Harbor-ebook/dp/B0972C155B/ref=sr_1_1011?crid=3L9CL2H3H805X&dchild=1&keywords=paranormal+%26+urban+fantasy&qid=1626453808&refinements=p_72:1248987011,p_n_feature_nine_browse-bin:3291437011,p_n_date:1249101011&rnid=1249099011&s=digital-text&sprefix=paranormal+%26+U,digital-text,197&sr=1-1011

This is my book review for Meet Me In Maine: Book One of The Blue Harbor Series, by Susanne Leist.

******

Book description:

Elizabeth Reading and Scarlett Harding travel to Blue Harbor, Maine, hoping to find a bed-and-breakfast to buy and a peaceful town. What they discover instead is much more sinister…

When they visit the local ice cream parlor, a man rushes through the doorway, clutching his throat and dying in a pool of blood. Chief Lively and two men, David Hunt and Logan Rayne, interrogate Elizabeth and Scarlett. Elizabeth stares at the dashing, blue-eyed David, stunned she agreed to a date with him just hours ago.

Elizabeth wants to pack her bags and visit other harbor towns, but Scarlett insists on keeping their appointment. They fall in love with the quaint bed-and-breakfast and sign the papers a few days later.

Once they settle into the inn, strange incidents plague Blue Harbor. At Scarlett’s date with Jonathan Hale, the charming ice cream parlor owner, a woman’s head explodes at the next table. A suspicious explosion rocks the harbor, destroying boats and part of the dock. Their fears mount as an intruder breaks into the inn.

The curse placed by the Penobscot Indians on the original settlers and descendants of Blue Harbor has returned with a violent twist.

Have Elizabeth and Scarlett put their lives in danger by dating two of Blue Harbor’s descendants? Should they sell the inn or stay and fight the curse alongside David, Logan, and Jonathan?

*****

Five stars from Blaze McRob!

I love the state of Maine, and I'm fascinated with Penobscot Indian lore, so it was quite a natural thing for me to purchase Meet Me In Maine. The more I read, the more I was pulled into the story. Blue Harbor, the locale where the story unfurls, is a charming little town, but is also a cursed town filled with many mysteries. I very much enjoyed the fast-paced action that Susanne Leist brought into this novel. From start to finish, chaos reigned. My kind of story!

Elizabeth and Scarlett have to battle back against murders, explosions, a wonky police chief who constantly gets in the way of solving crimes, and much more. I don't want to get too explicit with my descriptions because they will take away from your reading enjoyment. There are many what the hell moments in this novel. Just when you think you have everything figured out, you find out you're wrong again.

Anything can and does happen in this tome, so don't start reading with the idea you'll chip away at any clues that might line your reading pathway. I certainly never expected to read most of what was spread out before me.

If you like fast-paced, suspense, horror, mystery, and paranormal tales, with romance thrown in for good measure, you'll be sure to enjoy Meet Me In Maine.

From Susanne Leist:

A career in writing has been an enormous leap for me. Accustomed to the number-crunching field of budgeting and the hectic commodity markets, I left my first career and M.B.A. in Finance behind to pursue my dream. However, I do not regret my foray into literature for one moment. I write every day and have even tried my hand at poetry. So don’t let anyone tell you it’s too late in life to try something different. It is never too late to follow your heart.

THE DEAD GAME SERIES brings fantasy and surrealism to the classic murder mystery with dead bodies, suspects, and clues. In addition, it offers vampires and a touch of romance to spice the motley mix.

MEET ME IN MAINE, the first book in THE BLUE HARBOR SERIES, provides the backdrop for murder, mystery, and romance in a seaside town. Love falters and flourishes as the residents fight the persistent evil plaguing their small-town lives.

Sit back, put up your feet, and let me bring mystery and romance to your lives.

LIVING GREEN: GREAT BOOKS TO READ ABOUT POLLUTION AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Painting by Vi Huntley-Franck

Today, I’m going to suggest some great books to read for those of you concerned with pollution, climate change, and being a responsible human. I’ll be adding in more as my Living Green series continues.

I’ll start with the book that started it all off for environmentalists everywhere. Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson.

https://www.amazon.com/Silent-Spring-Rachel-Carson-ebook-dp-B087ZZ8QMG/dp/B087ZZ8QMG/ref=mt_kindle?_encoding=UTF8&me=&qid=

First published by Houghton Mifflin in 1962, Silent Spring alerted a large audience to the environmental and human dangers of indiscriminate use of pesticides, spurring revolutionary changes in the laws affecting our air, land, and water. “Silent Spring became a runaway bestseller, with international reverberations . . . [It is] well crafted, fearless and succinct . . . Even if she had not inspired a generation of activists, Carson would prevail as one of the greatest nature writers in American letters” (Peter Matthiessen, for Time’s 100 Most Influential People of the Century).

This edition celebrates Rachel Carson’s watershed book with a new introduction by the author and activist Terry Tempest Williams and a new afterword by the acclaimed Rachel Carson biographer Linda Lear, who tells the story of Carson’s courageous defense of her truths in the face of ruthless assault from the chemical industry in the year following the publication of Silent Spring and before her untimely death in 1964.

My next selection is Diet For A Small Planet, by Frances Moore Lappe. This is not simply a diet book. This is a book of conscience. I’m mentioning it at a particularly volatile time when meat might be hard to find or the cost prohibitive.

https://www.amazon.com/Diet-Small-Planet-20th-Anniversary-ebook/dp/B003F3PLBW/ref=sr_1_1?crid=SCWYDN865AI2&dchild=1&keywords=diet+for+a+small+planet&qid=1589051788&s=books&sprefix=diet%2Caps%2C17

The book that started a revolution in the way Americans eat.

The extraordinary book that taught America the social and personal significance of a new way of eating is still a complete guide for eating well in the twenty-first century.

Sharing her personal evolution and how this groundbreaking book changed her own life, world-renowned food expert Frances Moore LappĂ© offers an all-new, even more fascinating philosophy on changing yourself—and the world—by changing the way you eat.

The Diet for a Small Planet features:

• simple rules for a healthy diet

• streamlined, easy-to-use format

• food combinations that make delicious, protein-rich meals without meat

Vietnam 1962–1975, by John CT Miller

I add this book, not with any pros or cons about the war in Vietnam, but to bring to light many of the harms that Agent Orange caused and is still causing. I will have a big expose on what I consider to be criminal acts in the testing, manufacture, and disposal of this deadly dioxin.

https://www.amazon.com/VIETNAM-1962-1975-continues-genrations-Vietnamese-ebook/dp/B087Z1VXKC/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=agent+orange&qid=1589074143&s=books&sr=1-6

There have been hundreds of books written by those Americans who served their country either willingly or forced to do so in Vietnam. But little has been written about how the American government and its military deliberately lied time after time to its citizens and worse still to its own troops in Vietnam.

This book does not feature or include the thousands of close encounters or combat incidents retold by many American Vietnam veterans, but highlights the many lies told and spread by American authorities, especially Agent Orange and its consequences. Agent Orange must be one of the worst orchestrated litany of lies by the government and the military.

This deadly dioxin based herbicide has also led to millions of innocent Vietnamese being poisoned.

While the war might be over some 50 years ago, the battle for the millions of returning American troops and millions of Vietnamese continues to this day.

Dioxin, is one of the deadliest substances known to humankind. Just 85 grams of dioxin, if evenly spread, could wipe out a city of eight million people.

Illnesses and lingering deaths from Agent Orange exposure were only the early consequences of that war.

Dioxin affects not only people exposed to it, but also their children and their children’s children, and alters DNA.

The Vietnam war might have ended for the Americans, but for millions of Vietnamese families the battle against Agent Orange and survival continues.

American bombs and bullets no longer maim and kill, but instead, the Americans left behind a hidden and silent killer.

Toxic Communities, by Dorceta Taylor

This book is one I stumbled upon and am glad I did! It is well researched and superbly written. The author explains how low-income and minority communities have been dumped on, contaminated, and exposed.

https://www.amazon.com/Toxic-Communities-Environmental-Industrial-Residential-ebook/dp/B00KAH3IBQ/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=toxic+waste&qid=1589075699&s=books&sr=1-8

Uncovers the systemic problems that expose poor communities to environmental hazards.

From St. Louis to New Orleans, from Baltimore to Oklahoma City, there are poor and minority neighborhoods so beset by pollution that just living in them can be hazardous to your health. Due to entrenched segregation, zoning ordinances that privilege wealthier communities, or because businesses have found the ‘paths of least resistance,’ there are many hazardous waste and toxic facilities in these communities, leading residents to experience health and wellness problems on top of the race and class discrimination most already experience. Taking stock of the recent environmental justice scholarship, Toxic Communities examines the connections among residential segregation, zoning, and exposure to environmental hazards. Renowned environmental sociologist Dorceta Taylor focuses on the locations of hazardous facilities in low-income and minority communities and shows how they have been dumped on, contaminated and exposed.

Drawing on an array of historical and contemporary case studies from across the country, Taylor explores controversies over racially-motivated decisions in zoning laws, eminent domain, government regulation (or lack thereof), and urban renewal. She provides a comprehensive overview of the debate over whether or not there is a link between environmental transgressions and discrimination, drawing a clear picture of the state of the environmental justice field today and where it is going. In doing so, she introduces new concepts and theories for understanding environmental racism that will be essential for environmental justice scholars. A fascinating landmark study, Toxic Communities greatly contributes to the study of race, the environment, and space in the contemporary United States.

Book description:

The Ontarrin Galaxy is a rough and tumble place. Young Dar Meltom knows this for fact. As the half breed offspring of an incredibly unlikely joining between an Earthling male and a Satiren female, he knows what fighting is all about. Having spent his childhood on Erotis 3 getting into fights because he was different, Dar’s only solace comes from watching the stars. He’s crazy about them. He dreams about them, and secretly wishes he could be among them.

His mother, Denrika, knows her son is at a disadvantage. Living in a purebred society, his chances for getting a job after he graduates school are slim. Until one day, a large alien strolls into the general store where she works. His name is Gwog, and he’s captain of the space freighter Cunik. Little does he know, Denrika will convince him that he needs another crew member—a seventeen year old half breed with his head in the stars.

Dar joins the crew of the Cunik and quickly learns that space life isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. After being on board only a few days, he’s stricken with Skrinnian fever and nearly dies. Gwog and Karnis nurse him back to health, and then he learns more important lessons about death, pirates, love, and the value of the friends he’s made. Until such time as he’s on his own, Dar absorbs everything Gwog teaches him. Then, one night, a game of Sirrixian poker changes his life forever…

Space Crazy Rocks!

By Robert C. Nelson on January 21, 2012

Format: Kindle Edition

K. Rowe is my FAVORITE writer of sci-fi! Wham! The lady knows how to spin an in and out of this world tale that is funny, sexy, intriguing, and filled with suspense and battle scenes. Dar Melton, the hero in this tale, is a young man who has been picked on because of the fact he is different: half earthling and half Satiren. Even in the outer reaches of the universe, bullies exist, and they pick on people just because they're not the same as them.

But Dar's mother hopes to change all of that and give her son a chance in an unfair world. At the young age of 17, he joins up with the crew of a space freighter and becomes a man; and a proud warrior.

That's all I can say without ruining the story for you, but if you love a great action-packed sci-fi tale, grab this story and the ones to come in the series.

Oh, yeah! It doesn't get any better than this!

SIXTH FLOOR RETRIBUTION - BY BLAZE MCROB

https://www.amazon.com/Blazing-Owl-Short-Horror-Retribution-ebook/dp/B0999M84PL/ref=sr_1_11?crid=O9DSN9UEI0EY&dchild=1&keywords=blaze+mcrob&qid=1626398680&s=books&sprefix=blaze%2Caps%2C164&sr=1-11

Blazing Owl Short Horror: Sixth Floor Retribution is my latest short horror tale. Sometimes justice has to be meted out with a harsh hand. This is one of those stories. Take a ride where the law of the land comes from a source not known by many. I hope you enjoy this escape through the realm of the occult.

Blaze McRob

******

Read a short introduction to this tale of retribution:

Low fog drapes the cemetery landscape, cavorting about in myriad shapes when gentle breezes tease the evening air. But there is no frolicking in the southeast corner. That is where the newborns lie, some in shallow graves with no headstones to mark their presence. A simple one foot by six inch slab on the ground: that is all the space afforded them. Sadly enough, many of the plaques merely say “Baby Smith,” “Baby Jones,” and the like. As if these children don’t even deserve a first name? That is wrong.

The Angels Section this is called. A bench is placed here for parents to come, sit, and reflect on the children born to them who never survived beyond a day or two.

I sit here tonight and look at one of the few headstones in this area. There is no “Baby Olsen” mentioned on the stone. Robert Olsen is the name etched into the marble. It was the least I could do for my son. After only one day of life, he mysteriously became ill from some so called staph infection and died. My wife couldn’t handle it and left for parts unknown. No loss for me. It’s her life. She can live it as she sees fit.

It took a while for me to scrape enough money together for the headstone, but I did it. The doctors . . . the idiot doctors responsible for my son’s death took me to court to get their money and won the case. Yeah, the medical community always finds a way to get their money. Never mind the fact they botched everything up from the very beginning. I’m no doctor, but when a baby is born in a room that has not been sterilized correctly, and the doctor arrives, the stench of whiskey on his breath, stumbling around the room in a stupor, and almost rips the baby out of the womb, there is definite neglect present.

Sure, but everything was hushed up, and I was thrown out of the birthing room when I demanded another doctor.

That was three years ago. And the time has come for retribution.

PSYCHOPATHIC REVENGE: BY BLAZE MCROB

Blazing Owl Short Horror: Psychopathic Revenge, by Blaze McRob, is a Zombie tale that is not the usual Zombie virus story. Zane might have a rather hearty appetite for human flesh, but he's no mindless buffoon. He's a thinker, and what he thinks about is revenge: cold, calculated revenge. Read the teaser below  and you'll see what I mean.

They pry a couple of loose boards away from the door frame in back and make their way into the building, pushing away the matted cobwebs, and sliding around on some of the fresher rat shit all over the floor.

"Damn it, Herb!" she shouts. "What kind of a place did you bring me into? Is this what you call a romantic hide-a-way? If you think you're going to get any pussy from me in here, you're one delusional son-of-a-bitch!"

"C'mon, Lola, it's not that bad; not in the balcony anyway. Besides, who would have the balls to come in here and nose around in the dark?"

"Yeah, we're the only intelligent ones with guts. There'll be no orgies held in here tonight. Just you and me. I can hardly wait to have my ass slide around on the slime. To anyone else that might be a moment breaker. But not to you."

"That's my girl. I knew you'd come around."

"Come around, my ass! I'm getting the fuck out of here. I'd rather screw a snake in a septic tank."

"Tell you what: let me check out the balcony area as long as we're here. If it's as bad as the rest of the joint, we'll leave. If not, maybe you'll reconsider."

"And I'm supposed to wait right here for you? I don't think so!"

"It's safer here than outside alone."

That's the only thing Herb's said tonight that has made any sense, not that she wants to wait down here. "Okay, I'll wait right here. I have my light. You better have one of your own because I'm not giving mine up."

     "Fair enough."

He works his light slowly across the floor in front of him, wishing now he'd gotten a larger one at the hardware store and climbs the semi-spiral to the balcony. Shining his light on the floor, he finds thick carpeting, and when he gets down on his hands and knees, he discovers the whole area to be immaculate: dry to the touch, with no signs of anything like they walked through downstairs.

"Come here, Lola!" he hollers as he runs down the stairs so fast he misses one and takes a tumble. He reaches for the wall and the railing but is repulsed by a sudden over-powering stench. An enormous shadow looms over him, becoming smaller as it gets closer, ever closer to him.

A face, if one can call it a face, emerges from the shadow, and smiles down at him, not saying a word, just sneering at him, goading him to do anything. Herb reaches up and pulls at the face, shrinking back when his hands jerk back filled with loose flesh.

Before Herb can utter a sound, the creature springs forward and tears out his vocal chords. The young man is silent as his protagonist consumes him alive, enjoying the delights of having him twitch within his grip.

Lola can hear a ruckus in the area of the balcony but is too far away to tell what it is. What's wrong? Herb was excited just moments ago and now . . .

Steps! Steps are coming towards her. They're in no hurry; they're slow and deliberate.

     "Who's there!"

     More steps. Faint breathing.

"Herb! Is that you? Are you okay?"

The breathing becomes heavier, albeit labored, and the steps almost sound like one leg is hesitant, maybe even dragging behind the other one.

Lola backs towards the door. Something is wrong: she needs out of here!

She reaches the door, but as she tries to pull her way out through the opening, long, sinewy hands reach up and grab her, pulling her back in. In too much shock to put up much resistance, she almost willingly accepts the beasts intrusions on her body as he tears her clothing off her body and has his way with her, inserting his rotting but still rock hard dick deep inside her while eating her breasts as she spasmodically flails about.

Fortunately for Lola, it is over in a hurry as the beast gets too zealous and oversteps the boundaries of what constitute sexual gratification and dietary needs. Her lifeless body is still in the clutches of her captor, but she feels no more pain.

Zane rises up for a bit. There is no need for immediate cleaning up in here. This is his domain. He is its Lord and Master.

About Blaze McRob

I’m a rather diverse writer. Some of my fans refer to me as being the King of Revenge Horror. Others know me for my action stories. Both are right. Add in many other strange quirks and traits and you’ll find a writer who is not bound by any constraints. Horror has always been my first love. At the age of nine, I had already consumed everything written by the great Edgar Allan Poe. So naturally, I will fill my Patreon page with many short stories of the dark, serial fiction novels, flash fiction, Father Blaze Nursery Rhymes, zombie fairy tales, horror poetry, science fiction, and more. There will be untold hours of escapism found in my tales of horror.

There will be no non-fiction on my page. I would be just another voice crying out in the wilderness. I want none of that. I will deal with whatever issues attack my gray matter the way I know best: using my story people to handle the evil running around on this spinning rock of ours from deep within my soul. My system. It works for me.

Every month, I will have at least a mix of thirty stories, novel chapters, or my other fiction. Everything I post here will not be available to read anywhere else. This place is for my loyal fans and patrons. All this for only $3.00 a month.

All my writings will remain exclusive to Patreon for at least three months after their posting. After that time period, I will make them available for sale elsewhere. However, I will not remove any of my tales from Patreon. My Patrons will still be able to read everything here. And, believe me, that's a lot of reading.

Thank you for your time. I hope to have many of you as Patrons.

******

As you can see, I removed the confusion factor and only have one tier. For $3.00 a month, you can read everything I post here. It all stays here. That gives you plenty of time to read everything I post. As of the moment, I have 378 writings on my page. I've only been on Patreon since October 1st of 2020. I have a lot more to add.

For novel lovers, I have already published eight novels, one chapter at a time:

Wolf Whispers

Ghost No More

Destiny Changed

Mists Of Papoose Pond

Last Chance

Again, Damn It!

Quarter Moon Haunts

'68 Buick

I am currently working on two other novels:

Again, Damn It! : Book Two

Quarter Moon Haunts: Book Two

All this is in addition to many short stories.

I honestly believe you'll get your money's worth and more.

NINE LIVES - BY BLAZE MCROB

Nine Lives is the newest tale in the Blazing Owl Short Horror series. This one comes from Blaze McRob. It's a different take on some of the old legends and stories that I ran across when I was in Vietnam. No matter where you go, or what you're doing, unexplainable things happen. Some are better than others. Could this be one of them? Or is it one of those stories that sometimes  place repressed memories in a part of our minds. Read and find out.

Here is a short teaser:

The edges of the jungle dance to the tune played by the vibrant colors of the burning village, while  twisting, cavorting shadows intersperse with unknown entities hiding beyond where no light will go.

I know what lurks within the boundaries of the dense undergrowth. Most of what resides there is not good. Death lives and thrives at its core and spreads out to capture ever more territory when the veil of darkness works in its favor.

For now, at least, the fire is saving those of us still alive from being entombed within the snare of annihilation. I wonder if that's a good thing, though. Sure, we're saved for now, but at what cost? Capture later on? Torture?

Some fucking life! Yet, some of us can't condone rolling over and accepting a fate of doom. Better to resist and fight 'til the end than to subjugate yourself to the wishes of the tormentors.

Fuck! I don't make the rules. This is war. One side wins. One side loses. It's as simple as that.

Most of the villagers waste no time in leaving their former homes. No sense in staying now. All that remains is burned rubble and ash. We help those who need it to get on their way. Their stares tell me what I already know without a word having been spoken: the burning of their village, the forced evacuation from the little they owned was our fault. Yeah, in their minds, the 'Cong were after us and this was all a retaliatory move.

How the hell are we supposed to fight and win a war where no one respects us or what we are trying to do for them? They would rather roll over and capitulate to the Commie bastards than fight on their own behalves. Not all of them; but a great many feel that way.

It appears that twenty or so of us are left. No sense in leaving now. As long as the fires are raging, we're safer where we're at. We better dig in, though. Once the air around us loses the brilliance of the fires and the all-encompassing darkness takes over, we're sitting ducks.

"C'mon guys!" I holler out. "You know what we have to do. Let's do it."

"But Sarge . . ."

"No buts, soldier! Just do it. That's an order!"

I hope you enjoy this story.

LIVING GREEN: CLIMATE CHANGE AND PANDEMICS

Painting by Vi Huntley-Franck

Climate change contributes to disease outbreaks around the world. More deadly pandemics will come if something is not done soon to slow climate change down.

Most of these diseases originated in animals, specifically wildlife, that transmitted the diseases to humans. Habitat destruction and agricultural development on wildland force wild animals closer to humans. This, in turn, allows new strains of infectious diseases to thrive.

Removing forests eliminates the natural environment of some species. This doesn’t mean they have no place to live. Human houses, sheds, and the like can attract insects, bats, and more.

Covid-19 originated in a horseshoe bat, transmitted through another animal, and then to humans. Bats have more than 3,000 strains of coronavirus that can be transmitted to humans. In the wild, they don’t have close proximity to humans. Jam houses up the forest edges, and you’re talking a whole new game. Where are they to go, but the happy homeowner’s domicile?

With a loss of habitat comes possible extinction of animal and plant species. Logging, fires, and agricultural expansion are all at fault. The Amazon rainforest is seeing this now with the rape of the land by logging and mining. This area is ripe for Covid-19 spread.

The risk of mosquito-borne viruses will increase in the tropics, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. Unfortunately, poorer countries will be hardest hit. Dengue fever, for example, will hit hard in areas where people can’t afford air conditioning and protections against disease exposure. West Nile Virus, enhanced by warmer temperatures, will spread easier in birds and then to people.
