BLAZE MCROB'S NANOWRIMO NOVEL FOR 2019 IS FINISHED

https://nanowrimo.org/

My novel for NaNoWriMo this year is finished. It was my ninth consecutive year of participating in this great event. For those of you who are unaware of what happens at NaNo, writers need to write a novel of at least 50,000 words in one month. I'm over the 1,000,000 word mark for the nine years I've been doing this. This year I wrote The Names On The Wall, a horror/terror/suspense tale. My finishing total is 105,091 words. I have many friends busy writing for NaNo. Some have finished, and others are closing in. Best wishes to all of you!

Happy reading.

NANOWRIMO 2019

http://nanowrimo.org/

I will be writing another novel for NaNoWriMo this November of 2019. It will be my ninth consecutive year of participating in this great event. For those of you who are unaware of what happens at NaNo, writers need to write a novel of at least 50,000 words in one month. I'm closing in on the 1,000,000 word mark this year. I'm hoping to make it. This year I'll be writing The Names On The Wall, a horror/terror/suspense tale.

Many of my author friends are writing this year, as well. As usual, we all pull for each other. I wish everyone the best in their endeavors.

I'll be busy, so I won't be around as much as normal, but I'll pop in as often as I can.

Happy reading.

BLAZIN' HEARTS - BY BLAZE MCROB

https://books2read.com/u/47EByN

Blazin' Hearts, by Blaze McRob, is available for purchase at many eBook stores. Check the link above.

This collection of ten short stories is not quite a Hallmark collection of Valentine fluff, as if you would expect anything of the sort from me. This is a rather nasty collection of Ghouls, Dark Angels, torture chambers, werewolves, revenge of young lovers, and more. There is something for everyone here, except for kids. None of these tales are suitable for children. For those of you who like a story or ten on the morbid side, this tome is for you.

Happy reading. Forget the chocolates and roses. Buy this book and read the stories with your lover. Just saying. And yes, this book definitely sates the horror appetites of Halloween as well as Valentine's Day.

Blaze McRob

TIME FOR ANOTHER CAMP NANOWRIMO BOOK BY BLAZE MCROB

July is the month for the second Camp NaNoWriMo of the year. For this one, I plan to write Dogs, Skunks, & Other Runners - Book 2. I ran for over thirty years and have many tales to tell. As was the case with the first book, this is not a how-to book. It will be filled with stories of adventures of fellow runners and myself. There were many shenanigans in my career, let me tell you. I have so many stories to tell that two books might not even be enough. I hope that you'll enjoy reading these non-fiction stories.

SCARY SUNDAY - GOTHIC REVIVAL - BY CARSON BUCKINGHAM

https://www.amazon.com/Gothic-Revival-Carson-Buckingham-ebook/dp/B00MU1F8MM/ref=cm_rdp_product_img#nav-subnav

Here's my book review for Gothic Revival, by Carson Buckingham. This is a great novel!

Blaze McRob

Book description:

Alex and Leo Renfield are a husband and wife contractor team who’ve recently moved to the village of Woodhaven, Connecticut to escape the chaos of life in New York. Pretty close to broke, they meet Theodora Hamilton, a somewhat unsavory and odd individual, who offers them an astronomical amount of money to repaint the first floor of her family home.

But along with the huge paycheck comes a set of unsettling rules that must be followed explicitly if they are to accept the offer; one of which is they must reside on the property having no direct contact with the outside world until the job is complete.

Is Theodora Hamilton just an eccentric woman with a peculiar way of doing things, or is there a more sinister agenda that Alex and Leo are unaware of? What exactly does she have in store for this down-on-their-luck couple who have no choice but to accept the offer and the strange requirements that come along with it?

This review is from: Gothic Revival (Kindle Edition)
Gothic Revival, by Carson Buckingham, is the author's best work to date. One would think a 536 page novel would have some slow, drawn out sections, but not for Carson. She is a master at Gothic story-telling and knows how to keep the story moving.

I am particularly impressed by the fact there is no elaborate over-description involved. To me, that is boring. Give me some action; some psychological horror. Carson gives the reader all the description she/he needs without describing every useless tid-bit a reader doesn't want to know.

How does she do this? Through her skillful use of dialogue. Too many authors are totally without dialogue skills. Carson could write a non-fiction book on the subject. But then again, anyone who reads Gothic Revival will see what I'm talking about. Her dialogue is written the way people actually talk. Fancy the concept! She has hit upon a secret so simple that it eludes far too many authors.

Now I come to a part of Carson's writing that I really enjoy. Her sense of humor. What, you ask, humor in Gothic horror? You betcha. Once more, Master Carson Buckingham comes riding along on her trusty steed and delivers the right amount of humor at the perfect time. Superb!

Take dialogue unmatched by any author past or present, add in humor, suspense, romance, and a foreboding creepy feeling polishing it all off, and you have Carson Buckingham.

You will notice my review does not tell you the details of the story. Yikes! Why do that? Read the description and the free sample for that. I'm here to tell you about the author's skills. Of that, Carson has many. Besides, I wanted to blurt out some goodies, but that would have been a spoiler. Not my style.

Gothic Revival is a masterpiece!

SCARY SUNDAY - COBWEBS - BY C.L. HERNANDEZ

C. L. Hernandez is a favorite author of Terri DelCampo and me. Cobwebs is the collection of wonderful horror shorts that introduced me to this skilled author. Read our reviews below. Believe me: you will find a new favorite author. She is that good.

Book description:

A mummified hand seeks revenge. A harmless witch gets pushed a little too far. The Grim Reaper falls victim to a prank. This is the kind of ghoulish fun you'll find in Cobwebs, volume one of C. L. Hernandez's Horror Story Six-Packs! Six ghoulishly crafted stories to keep you awake long into the night! Try one a day, or be a glutton for punishment, and devour them all at once!

Six different recipes for keeping awake at night. Hernandez weaves creepiness and dread into a horror merengue that oozes down your spine and chills your marrow.

5.0 out of 5 stars There Are No Cobwebs In C.L. Hernandez's Head! This Collection Is Brilliant!
By Robert C. Nelson on March 14, 2014
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Cobwebs, by C.L. Hernandez, is a brilliant collection! I am new to this author, having stumbled across her when she asked to be my friend on Facebook. This collection would be outstanding for an established author, let alone a new talent on the scene. She is a classic example of why I love to read horror written by women authors. There is that special something and she "has" it!

All of these stories are awesome. And they are all so different. There is not only humor sprinkled into this collection, there is sarcastic wit bandied about - my favorite kind! Give The Man A Hand proves that.

The Leaf Lady is a wonderful revenge story. I am screaming to say more, but I would ruin it for you.

Stage Dive is the shortest one and it floored me because of the ending. Superb!

Death In A Bottle shows me the intelligence dwelling within this story. This is my favorite in the collection! The Grim Reaper versus . . . versus a most cunning adversary.

Brie Noir has horror, revenge, love, and witchcraft all wrapped up into a superb tale. Oh. It also has cheese.

Tub toys is the most chilling one in the collection. You know something is going to happen, but when and how?

There you have it! Six fantastic stories from an author I want to read more tales from. You will love every story! My personal guaranty!

Don't miss out! Buy this great collection now!

SCARY SUNDAY - TOUCHING SPIRITS: CONTACT - BY JD PHILLIPS

https://www.amazon.com/Touching-Spirits-Contact-JD-Phillips-ebook/dp/B018NVCT2O/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8

Here is my book review for Touching Spirits: Contact, by JD Phillips:

5.0 out of 5 stars
Great Jumping Ghost!
February 16, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition

JD Phillips has a fantastic tale in Touching Spirits: Contact! She tells the story from the perspective of a ghost. This poor spirit is lost in an afterlife, unsure of how he got there. He deals with things as best he can, taking the good with the bad. He discovers there are perks to being a ghost, but there are also things that are beyond his control.

One of my favorite lines in this novel is, "Still, the afterlife ain't all fireflies and rainbows, you know, or else damn near everyone would jump ship early to join the party."

Obviously, there is humor in this story: a lot of it. I won't add in some of the fantastically witty phrases JD fills this book with, but there are some that had me laughing out loud! Don't let that make you believe there is no horror in this tome. There is. Plenty of it.

Picture a ghost making a believer of a non-believing paranormal TV star and getting him to help solve a murder case. Add in hi-jinks of the highest order. Supply some touchy-feely moments and glimpses into the soul which show good as well as bad traits of humanity. Combine and stir well. Voila! You have Touching Spirits: Contact!

I recommend this book highly.

Book description:

Real live spook (Killian A. Black) decides to make Dusty's life hell until he agrees to do the right thing and help solve a murder.

SCARY SUNDAY - SHYPOKE - BY DONA FOX

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DD5SYFF/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i47

Shypoke, by Dona Fox, is this week's Scary Sunday tale. It's a short story that is well worth every horror reader's attention. It starts out slowly, building with every sentence, but hits you over the head at the end, making you say, "Wow! That was a fantastic read!" For me, this is the perfect story to read before going to sleep. It enables me to think about life - the true meaning. Yes, me lads and lassies, stories such as this one are truth: every bit as much as what bounces around before our eyes. Dare I say, even more so.

I give Shypoke 5 Blazing Stars!

I'm re-starting my Scary Sunday series. I will be shining the spotlight on fantastic authors with some great books. My first book is Crowns and Cabals, by Dina Rae. I bought my copy and I love it! Dina is the Queen of Conspiracy Theories. This new novel by her talks about the New World Order. She spins quite a tale. Read the generous free sample on Amazon, and you'll see what I mean. Do you love secret society books? Do you love action? If you do, Purchase this tale. I highly recommend it. I give it 5 Blazing Stars!

MAY 18, 2019, IS ARMED FORCES DAY

I wrote this a number of years ago. It was one of my editorials back in the day when I still did some editorial work for newspapers. I dedicate it to the fantastic people serving in all branches of the Armed Forces today. This old Soldier appreciates the job you are doing!

Ravages Of War

The year was 1967 and the jungle was filled with the stench of napalm and burning vegetation. Chaos reigned: both sides were confused and scrambling to save themselves from the onslaught of the raging battle.
It was to no avail for far too many. Dead and dying soldiers littered the landscape. Hell on earth, made even more real by the dancing wickedness of the flames taunting them, showed that Heaven was perhaps nothing more than a myth, an abstract of reality.
We huddled together for a brief moment, discussing what needed to be done, and then raced to save those we could; those with some kind of flickering glimmer of hope. Sadly, there were not many within reach of a helping hand.
There were perhaps a dozen of us still able to walk, and we carried the wounded out on makeshift stretchers made from old blankets and whatever other materials we could scrounge up for the purpose. It was a long trek back to rejoin our main command post, but we persevered, ever aware of the hazards ahead. We hadn't even reached the end of the evening before we lost some of our wounded.
Time. Time was a major factor. It was not working in our favor.
On the second night, I noticed a young grunt who was in excruciating pain, sounds of its intensity filling the jungle air. His leg . . . his leg was the cause of it all. He was trying to reach it with his hands, almost looking as if he wanted to tear the offending limb from his body.
I took my knife and cut his pants leg to his knee. Staring at his tortured face for a couple seconds, I called for my comrades.
Silence, the horrid silence accompanying impending doom stared us in the face. His leg was obviously full of gangrene. It had to be removed or this young man would die. No need to tell him: we simply had to do it. There were no options.
Yes, we had no anesthesia; nothing other than a bottle of Jack Daniels. We used it, making sure he was well looped before we cleaned and disinfected the knife in the flames of the fire we had made.
The time came to do what had to be done, but everyone froze: who could possibly perform the operation? We were soldiers, not medics. I was the youngest, only eighteen at the time, but all eyes focused on me. Shit! The life of this man was in my hands. I had only read of this type of thing, enough to know about tourniquets and such, but I took the knife in my hand and did what was necessary, the pain experienced by the soldier ripping through the jungle.
He collapsed into unconsciousness. His torment for the moment was over. We had no way of knowing if we had been in time to save him, but we could hope. There was always hope.

Forty years later, I was standing on line in a local McDonalds, waiting on my food, when I noticed a man standing in front of me. He was on crutches, one leg missing beneath the knee. His face . . . his face had a familiarity I couldn't place: not at first, anyway.
He must have felt the glare of my stare on his back because he turned and returned my glance with one of his own.
     "Khe Sahn, 1967," I said.
"Yes," he said."How did you know?"
I shuffled around nervously. "Your leg. I'm the one who cut your leg off."
He stared back at me, intensity building in his stare. "For years, I hated you. I didn't know who you were, but I hated you. You cut off my leg! I wasn't whole. The torture of rehabilitation was unbearable. The thought of revenge if I should ever meet you was what kept me going. Then one day a doctor told me you saved my life and that that was better than dying in that infernal Hell-hole."
No more words were said by either of us for about a minute. Then he said, "Thank you, brother! You saved my life. I owe you big time!"
We stood there and hugged, tears falling unashamedly from both our eyes. We talked for awhile about life and loves won and lost, and we parted ways.
It doesn't take Thanksgiving to make someone thankful.
Life. Having life and knowing others made it through the harshest of times is plenty of thanks for me.

BLAZE MCROB FINISHES CAMP NANOWRIMO

https://campnanowrimo.org

I have finished my Camp NaNoWriMo novel for April, 2019. I wrote 60,000 words with a week left. All I have to do now is flesh it out a bit more and do some of my own editing before it goes to my editor. I wrote a horror/adventure/love story, of a different kind. Hmm. It also has military/political and survivalist goodies included. Dang me anyway! I'll let you know when it's published. Terri DelCampo is almost finished with hers, as well. News coming soon for her book.

Happy reading, my friends, and for those of you who are also writing for Camp NaNoWriMo, have fun and keep me posted on how you're doing.

I would like to thank Melanie and Cyrene Olson, the editor of Uncaged Book Reviews.

The book that is featured is my horror novel Mists Of Papoose Pond. The magazine is free, so you can read the first chapter of my novel and take a look at what some other great authors have for you!

CAMP NANOWRIMO STARTS TOMORROW FOR TERRI DELCAMPO & BLAZE MCROB

Terri DelCampo and I will both be busy in April. Camp NaNoWriMo demands our attention. I'm not 100% sure what Terri is going to write. I'll let you know as soon as she gives me the word. As for me, I have changed my mind as to what I want to write. Originally, I was going to write a fantasy with no bad words in it. I've decided I'm not up to keeping my language in check at the moment, so I will write a horror/adventure/love story, of a different kind. Hmm. It will also have military/political and survivalist goodies included. I will stir everything up and see what happens. Dang me anyway!

Happy reading, my friends, and for those of you who are also writing for Camp NaNoWriMo, have fun and keep me posted on how you're doing.

Reading Horror Can Arm Us Against A Horrifying World

https://www.npr.org/2018/08/05/635052036/reading-horror-can-arm-us-against-a-horrifying-world

This is a well-written article by Ruthanna Emrys on National Public Radio. I totally agree with what she has to say, and it's not because I'm a horror author. I know the article is not completely directed at children, but horror is good for them in the same way it is for adults. Go back in time to the old fairy tales and you certainly don't see a lot of fluffy lambies. This spinning rock we're on is not a paradise. Tough lessons are learned along the way.

As the author says:

"Horror as a genre is built around one truth: that the world is full of fearful things. But the best horror tells us more. It tells us how to live with being afraid. It tells us how to distinguish real evil from harmless shadows. It tells us how to fight back. It tells us that we can fight the worst evils, whether or not we all survive them — and how to be worthy of having our tales told afterward."

Ruthanna Emrys presents her case quite well.

CAMP NANOWRIMO

I will be returning to Camp NaNoWriMo next month. That means I'll be writing another novel of at least 50,000 words in April. I'll be writing The Enchanted Arch, a Fantasy novel with no bad words in it. Holy cow, Batman! This should be a challenge from potty-mouth me. I want something my younger children, grandchildren, and great grandson can read, or have read to them. I'll keep my readers posted when it's completed. By the way: older readers should enjoy it, as well.

Happy reading!

THE SEVEN-YEAR WITCH - BY CINDY KEEN REYNDERS

The Seven-Year Witch, by Cindy Keen Reynders, is now out! Dare I say that this is a charming paranormal witches & wizards romance, with a healthy dollop of fantasy and humor - I love her broom. The elements of horror contained within are quite subtle as everything is in perfect balance. Don't miss this superb novel!

Book description:

Novice witch Miranda Rose’s seventh and final task for the Supreme Witch’s Council is to find the legendary Philosopher’s Stone. Once that is achieved, she’ll accomplish her lifelong dream—to become a High Witch of the Wysteria Hedge Haven Clan. In a last-ditch effort to locate the precious gem, she travels through time to 1877.

Hidden within a dilapidated castle tower, Balthazar, a powerful young wizard, refuses to relinquish the stone. In a fit of pique, he zaps Miranda into a field just outside of Merry Olde London.

Sir Maxwell Chadwick is the sole witness to a fiery ball of light streaking across the midnight sky. Curious, he investigates and is surprised to discover a beautiful young woman among the smoldering ashes. Captivated by her alluring beauty, he cannot deny his instant attraction.

As for Miranda, she appreciates the handsome duke’s assistance. However, she finds his well-intentioned interference annoying because it delays her mission. It doesn’t take her long to realize Sir Maxwell holds the key to her heart, as well as her future.

A combination of fate, impractical magic and the Seven-Year Witch disease take the lovers on a rollicking, star-crossed adventure.

COVER REVEAL FOR - THE MONARCH MISSION FILES: CONSPIRACY - BY JENN NIXON!

SciFi Mystery Romance Cover Reveal for The Monarch Mission Files : Conspiracy @JennNixon
Killjoys meets Helix in Jenn Nixon’s next SciFi series coming this April!
Mari Yosoto has been keeping a dark and dangerous secret from everyone since her life-changing accident. No one would believe the truth anyway, her ex-fiancé had seen to that. Instead of wallowing in misery, she stays busy, shuttling cargo to the Moon and back, enjoying the easy work and time alone. When an old EarthCorps acquaintance asks for her help finding a missing girl on Mars, Mari can’t say no, even if it means working with the ex’s former best friend.
Although Trevor Nash took the Mars job to help his former commanding officer, deep down he needed to see Mari again. After trying and failing to find out what happened to her, Trevor makes the best of an odd situation, hoping he can remind Mari of their budding friendship and finally get answers. When their rescue mission goes sideways and they find the not-so-missing girl, a centuries-old conspiracy theory emerges and the only thing more unfathomable is learning Mari’s secret.
Together with their newly formed ragtag team, Mari and Trevor team up and undertake a mission unlike anything either of them has faced before with life-altering and possibly deadly consequences.
Sneak Peak:
Chapter One

Beep. Mari’s heart thumped so hard her ribcage hurt.

Beep. Beep. She lifted her head, shielding her eyes from the bright lights above her head.

Beep, beep. Beep, beep. There was something wrong with her hand. It didn’t feel right.

A pair of voices echoed from behind her, muffled and indecipherable through the fogginess filling her mind. Half of her body felt numb and cold, the other covered in fiery pins and needles. When she cried out in agonizing pain, the pair of brown eyes that filled her vision seemed familiar.

The accident flashed in her head.

Breathing became impossible.

Beep, beep, beep.

“You’re okay, Mari,” the male voice said, making her heart race faster.

Beep, beep, beep, beep. She lifted her arm, stared at her hand and screamed. “What did you do to me?”

BOOK REVIEW BY NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO FOR - THE THREAT - BY ANDREW G. MCCABE

https://www.amazon.com/Threat-Protects-America-Terror-Trump-ebook/dp/B07HFMYQPG/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1550789217&sr=1-1&keywords=the+threat+andrew+mccabe

https://www.npr.org/2019/02/14/694670497/mccabes-the-threat-may-be-darkest-vision-of-trump-presidency-yet

Yes, I know: I write horror, so why am I writing about a review that National Public Radio gave for The Threat by Andrew G. McCabe? Why not? If one keeps their head in the sand, they won't know what's happening around them. I like to be aware of what's going on. I'm not pushing this down anyone's throat. Read it if you want. Don't read it if you wish not to. Your choice. I found the review and I'm sharing it. Maybe, some of my readers will get something out of this. I did.

WOMEN IN HORROR MONTH

WOMEN IN HORROR MONTH

I have participated in Women In Horror Month for a number of years now. This year, however, I will not be able to participate as I have in the past. Even though my computer is back in operation - for the most part, anyway - I'm having problems with being able to post on our Blazing Owl Press website, and my old Blaze McRob's Tales Of Horror website is no longer up and running due to problems with Google. Gotta love it. Add in the fact that Facebook virtually spreads nothing around and is a massive, non-productive time-suck and no one will be made aware of the posts, I will post what I can on Twitter, which plays nice with me. So, my friends, that's where I'll be. I'll see you there.
