Dona Fox is my Woman In Horror today! Believe me when I say that she is one fantastic author. She and I met courtesy of Blog Talk Radio, via Viktor Aurelius, and my little buddy Mary G. Fortier-Schutz. Mary and her husband David told me to give a listen to the show, actually a series of them, where Viktor and his guests would talk about the anthology Terror Train. Dona was on the second show.
Show headlines:
"Tonight we will chat with several more of the authors of TERROR TRAIN. Joining us tonight are Dale Hollin, Murphy Edwards, Thomas Malafarina, Dona Fox, Aaron Besson, and William Cook. Also joining us are Editor Krista Clark Grabowski and Artist Stephen Cooney.
The Terror Train rides, from city to city, from village to village, through states, across rivers and mountains. If only it could tell its tales of grisly murder, of demonic pacts, black holes into different dimensions and portals to other realms where the ghosts of train robbers hunt in perpetuity for that elusive bullion filled carriage that cost them their immortal souls. Behold the terrors the train has witnessed, see firsthand the horrors it has lived through and when you get on board, pray, pray you've entered the right one, on the right track, the one that does not lead to oblivion...
Terror Train contains stories by new and established authors, with a guest story by William F. Nolan. All aboard!"
Unfortunately, I can't access the audio portion of this show, but it was quite a majestic piece.

I have mentioned it below, but I will mention it again here. In my humble opinion, the best way for you to get acquainted with Dona's great writing would be to read her short story collection Dark Tales From The Den. It is over the top great, and it is all Dona. I call them as I see them and this is a great collection.

Book description:
Find within seventeen unsettling tales that will ooze under your skin, cozy little tales that twist slowly strange and violent-delightfully dark. There’s a mean doll, a box full of bones-and newspaper clippings, a bank robbery gone horribly wrong-for almost everyone. Daddy’s last train, and the train Uncle Frank catches again and again, a haunted carousel that sparks up the night, an alien abduction, a meeting with the evil Lilith. Foxes. A girl you wouldn't want to meet in a bar-if you value your ink, a drug of the future with certain finality about it. Many graves dug, barns to die in, and ghosts and more ghosts. Seep into this book.

I believe this collection of short stories to be Dona's most exquisite display of her mastery at the craft. This is horror not to be missed!

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Dona Fox had me with her first story, 'Smoky Martini.' Creepy and atmospheric, it sets the stage for Dark Tales from the Den, her new collection of shorts. My favorites, along with 'Smoky Martini,' were 'Crawlspace'--suitably claustrophobic and disturbing--and the devastating 'Grace at the End.' Fox shows her deft hand for creating atmosphere and mood in these 18 shorts. Very much recommended!"
-John F.D. Taff, Bram Stoker-Nominated Author of The End in All Beginnings.
"You know that feeling when you suddenly wake from a nightmare, your heart racing and your body shaking with terror? That's the feeling DONA FOX captures with every macabre story in this excellent collection. She masterfully crafts each tale with an eerie, dream-like quality. My personal favorites were the creepy 'Crawl Space' and 'Grace at the End,' but every story is a heartfelt gem that will leave you breathless. I am blown away by Fox's talent and eagerly await her next work.

Dona Fox has written some truly disturbing stories for this collection; as a horror writer myself, it takes a bit to weird me out. All of these dark tales accomplished that, and then some. If you like being creeped out, Dona is a master. While all the stories were excellent, I think the most unusual was "Taking Ink"; quite unique. I liked "The Darkest Den" for its historical aspect. I look forward to reading all of Ms. Fox's books very soon.

Shypoke is a short story that is well worth every horror reader's attention. It starts out slowly, building with every sentence, but hits you over the head at the end, making you say, "Wow! That was a fantastic read!" For me, this is the perfect story to read before going to sleep. It enables me to think about life - the true meaning. Yes, me lads and lassies, stories such as this one are truth: every bit as much as what bounces around before our eyes. Dare I say, even more so.
I give Shypoke 5 Blazing Stars!
Book description:
Frank's back on the bridge, dodging sprawling vines as thick as his secrets, crushing the dark fruit beneath his soles as he flees. He must catch the train. Her voice traps him. The child he cannot ignore. "I watched you, Uncle Frank. I saw what you did."
He can hear the train's whistle. She clings to him, holding him tight as the horror approaches . . .

Crawl Space, by Dona Fox, packs a lot of pure horror into a short story. Dona is one of my favorite horror authors. This creepy back and forth, let me sort this out in my mind one more time story, will not depart from my thoughts for quite some time. If it ever does. I love to play a story around the gray matter and exhaust all possibilities. Dona has done that for me while still making me think, "Wow! Did I just read what I think I did?"
A lost girl, a wicked doll, and a sweet child brought into the mix. Who wins? Who loses? Fork over your 99 cents and find out. Let it walk around in your dreams. 5 Stars all the way!

Claustrophobic, disturbing, and creepy. A lost girl is kidnapped and held for years by a dangerous man. Her doll takes the brunt of his abuse in place of the girl. Then the man is killed in a bloody and brutal attack. Now she must protect her own child from the jealous, intrusive, and sometimes vicious toy. Who will survive when they enter the crawl space under the house? Quiet horror that punches all the buttons.
